This is a mandatory briefing for every user of the SP Cleanroom in the Cavendish Laboratory's Mott Building. Participants must attend annually as they will be provided with updated information on Cleanroom procedures and safety requirements.

A short course on basic first aid for Department of Physics staff and graduate students only.

NOTE: This course does not qualify you as a first aider.

Departmental health and safety and premises induction for STAFF, visitors, graduate students, undergraduate students (Part IB, II, or III) and MASt students starting study or work at the Department of Physics.

This briefing (Part 1) is for everyone and covers what to do in the event of an emergency, and how to report problems.

People carrying out practical experiments in a laboratory, doing other practical (e.g. maintenance) work, managing events or other people must also complete Physics Health & Safety: H&S Induction Part 2 - Risk Assessment Briefing (Online).

You may only attend this course if you have passed Fire Training Online (see "prerequisites" below).

This course is on VLE (Cambridge Moodle). When you book on this course an email will be sent to you with self-enrolment instructions.

Note: You are still required to read and confirm having read and understood the Living with Respiratory Communicable Diseases incl. Covid19 Safety Briefing on the Physics Health and Safety Intranet Page.

Anyone only working in an office is not required to complete Part 2, unless they manage people or events.

Departmental health and safety induction for STAFF, visitors, graduate students, undergraduate students (Part IB, II, or III) and MASt students starting study or work at the Department of Physics who will be doing one or more of the following:

  • running experiments
  • providing technical support
  • carrying out workshop or maintenance work

You may only attend this course if you have passed Part 1 and Fire Safety Training (see "prerequisites" below).

Anyone only working in an office is not required to complete this course, unless they manage people or events.

This in-lab induction and guided tour is for authorised users of the Semiconductor Physics Clean Room in the Mott

This is an introductory course which is required for users and supervisors of Class 3B and Class 4 lasers, before they receive hands-on training for use of specific lasers, and for registering as an "Authorized Laser User" in accordance with University of Cambridge and Department of Physics policy and procedure.

A short briefing for anyone who wishes to use X-ray generators at Department of Physics, University of Cambridge. Required before attending hands-on training on specific X-ray equipment and part of registrations as "Ionising Radiation User" (for details see this page).

Theory and practice session on safe manual handling within you work area. This session will relate directly to the manual handling tasks that you undertake daily.

This induction is required for anyone planning to work unsupervised at the Maxwell Centre, Department of Physics.

It has two parts:

  • Part 1 (this course) is for people working anywhere in the building
  • Part 2 is only for those working at the Maxwell laboratories

A short (10 minute) briefing covering the biological and other hazards to watch out for when walking through the PoM or carrying out independent non-experimental work, such as maintenance, cleaning, repairs to equipment, giving first aid, taking items through to Maxwell and vice versa, OR accompanying others who need authorised access (e.g. contractors).

If you will be located at the PoM or doing experimental work, you should attend the full PoM Induction instead (see "Related Courses").

This briefing session is for users of PoM who are returning to the building after being away for some time. The need for a refresher is determined by the Laboratory.

This is a short session designed to give basic information on the operation and hazards of the Semi-Conductor Physics Clean Room (Mott Building) to Department of Physics designated first aiders.

Training on how to use the University of Cambridge international travel risk assessment system, which replaces the current paper-based forms.

PLEASE NOTE: The session on 4th September is a PILOT for invited attendees only.
