Description

Departmental health and safety and premises induction for STAFF, visitors, graduate students, undergraduate students (Part IB, II, or III) and MASt students starting study or work at the Department of Physics.

This briefing (Part 1) is for everyone and covers what to do in the event of an emergency, and how to report problems.

People carrying out practical experiments in a laboratory, doing other practical (e.g. maintenance) work, managing events or other people must also complete Physics Health & Safety: H&S Induction Part 2 - Risk Assessment Briefing (Online).

You may only attend this course if you have passed Fire Training Online (see "prerequisites" below).

This course is on VLE (Cambridge Moodle). When you book on this course an email will be sent to you with self-enrolment instructions.

Note: You are still required to read and confirm having read and understood the Living with Respiratory Communicable Diseases incl. Covid19 Safety Briefing on the Physics Health and Safety Intranet Page.

Anyone only working in an office is not required to complete Part 2, unless they manage people or events.

Prerequisites

Fire Training Online

Objectives

By the end of this course (Part 1), participants should be able to:

  • Explain what to do if they hear a fire alarm, find a fire or need first aid
  • Describe their own, their supervisor's and the department's responsibilities for health and safety
  • Explain the requirements for safe working out of normal 'OPEN' hours of the department
  • Find information on how to set up workstations so they avoid lost time due to musculoskeletal problems
Aims

To enable students, staff and visitors to work safely at the Department of Physics, and comply with legal and other requirements, regardless of what they are doing.

Assessment

There is a short quiz at the end of the course.

Notes

You must attend these sessions to be allowed to carry out any work at the Department.

If you were a summer student/visitor and have attended an induction in the past 2 years, please tell the Undergraduate or Graduate Office or HR (as appropriate to your position).

Duration

Approximately 45 minutes.

Frequency

Refreshers - You should repeat this training:

  • once every 2 years if you are a member of staff (including temporary staff) or visitor, OR
  • if you are starting a postgraduate degree and last did the inductions more than 2 years ago, OR
  • if you were a graduate student and are now a member of staff, OR
  • if you have been away from the Department premises for at least 2 years, OR
  • you failed the quiz
