Supporting People with Unseen Disabilities new Finished 11:00 - 12:00 N/A - MS Teams

As part of the Festival of Wellbeing and in partnership with the Leaders and Managers Network, this session by Dr Hisham Ziauddeen will consider how we can understand unseen disabilities and support people with disability in the workplace, particularly as we move to new ways of working together.

The impacts of COVID on the disabled community and the challenges for the future will be considered. Disabled people are one of the groups in society that have been hit hardest by the pandemic and in the world of COVID, where we are moving to ‘life as normal’ and ‘living with the virus’, they will continue to be significantly affected. We need to understand these in order to think about how we can support our colleagues through the coming times.

10:00

To flourish, higher education institutions need to ensure that educational and work environments are high functioning, diverse, tolerant and respectful. The occurrence of bullying, harassment or sexual misconduct within an institution, even at a low-level, not only harms individuals, it can undermine the entire ethos and values of the institution. In addition to presenting reputational and legal risks, it can damage relationships and create low-morale, leading to under-performance and a reduction in time spent on the principle work of the institution, whether research-related or otherwise.

In line with the Dignity at Work policy, Taking the Lead focuses on the practical measures, knowledge and skills needed by senior leaders to create an environment free of bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct. It provides techniques to build confidence to address often difficult and complex situations at the earliest stage possible.

The session will also include time to consider a range of case studies faced by heads of institutions, and potential options for resolving with the best possible outcomes for all.
