A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys. Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions. The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand. |

PLEASE NOTE that this course will be taught live online, with tutors available to help you throughout if have any questions. All resources and lectures will be recorded and uploaded to the course VLE page so that you will be able to access that information even if technical or time zone restrictions means that you aren't able to join us for all of the live sessions. This award winning virtually delivered course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R or Python software environments. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the course focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the biological sciences. There are three core goals for this course:
Both R and Python are free software environments that are suitable for statistical and data analysis. In this course, we explore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypothesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The focus of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and developing robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying statistical theory. After the course you should feel confident to be able to select and implement common statistical techniques using R or Python and moreover know when, and when not, to apply these techniques. This course is an introduction to the CHRIS system and will cover an overview of key elements of the system that you will interact whilst undertaking HR tasks. Prior to attending please check that you can log into the CHRIS system successfully.

What is Impact? This course is going to disentangle academic and non-academic impact. It will explore the current research environment and impact agenda and help you understand how research is funded. You will get to discuss your research in small groups, and think about the types of impact it could generate. You will also understand where Public Engagement sits in the wider Impact agenda. You will have the opportunity to analyse impact cases studies that featured Public Engagement as a way of achieving Impact. |

Voice Workshop 2

This series of four voice workshops, led by Professor Helen Odell-Miller OBE from Anglia Ruskin University, will focus upon wellbeing through vocal exercises and singing, which will be fun, relaxing and non-demanding. No prior musical knowledge or singing experience is needed and sessions will be accessible for all, whether you are a seasoned singer, or new to it. The workshops aim to improve motivation and the ability to concentrate, relax and connect. In addition participants will have time to focus upon their wellbeing and achieving their full potential. Research shows that using the voice creatively, can motivate and enable our wellbeing and functioning, particularly when recovering from illness. The workshops will facilitate expression, social interaction, intellectual stimulation, fun and connection, through virtual vocal interaction, including movement. What to expect The four stand-alone workshops across four weeks will include relaxation exercises, vocal warm-ups, vocal exercises and small group work in breakout rooms which, for those interested, could also include song writing. Participants can keep their microphone off so no one can hear you; equally you can interact with others using your voice with the microphone on at certain points in the workshops if you prefer. Limited places Due to the nature of the sessions, places on the Voice Workshops will be limited, with a waiting list in operation. If you have a place, please make every effort to attend, or let the EDI Team know if for any reason you will be unable to use your place so it can be offered to someone else in good time. The facilitator Professor Helen Odell-Miller OBE is a Music Therapist and Director of the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research at Anglia Ruskin University. Submission of the first year report can seem to be a daunting experience, from constructing it to submitting and then being assessed by academic staff. In this session, Marie Dixon (Degree Committee Office, School of Physical Sciences), Rachel MacDonald and Deborah Longbottom will talk through all aspects of procedure and answer any questions students wish to pose. Students who went through their first year exam, as well as members of academic staff who carry out first year vivas will also be there to talk about the reality of the process from all perspectives. |
There is an increasing emphasis in research on the management and sharing of data. Many funding bodies that support research undertaken at Cambridge require not only open access to any publications based on that research, but also to the data underlying it. This course will help you understand funders’ requirements for management and sharing of research data, and will provide opportunities to create your own data management plan and test out resources that will make the data management process easier. This intensive Persian course is designed particularly for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Persian language, culture and heritage. However the course can be equally useful for those who are interested in learning Persian for more general purposes. We offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce spoken and written language on variety of topics. The classes are going to be conducted more or less in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for speaking and listening practice in Persian. And the medium of class will swiftly change to Persian by the end of the term. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Persian and/or communicate in Persian with native speakers.

PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout. The aim of this course is to familiarize the participants with the primary analysis of RNA-seq data. This course starts with a brief introduction to RNA-seq and discusses quality control issues. Next, we will present the alignment step, quantification of expression and differential expression analysis. For downstream analysis we will focus on tools available through the Bioconductor project for manipulating and analysing bulk RNA-seq. Collaboration Tools: Microsoft Teams - Virtual Train the Trainer (Live Online using MS Teams)

Are you new to teaching online? It is natural to feel apprehensive of this mode of delivery, virtual training has an additional skill set to those in a classroom based situation, and though your existing training skills remain essential, there is another layer of technical expertise to master. This online virtual workshop will help build your confidence delivering training sessions and give you an opportunity to practice and to receive feedback from other trainers. The emphasis of the course is not about the method and practice of teaching as an academic subject or theoretical concept, this is a hands-on workshop where you can practice in a safe environment. Before the workshop session, you must create an activity or convert one of your existing courses to an online version, and be prepared to present a 15-20 minute session. You will need to demonstrate that you have thought through and manged the pre-course bookings, communications and activities as well as competence using an online delivery tool. The workshop will be friendly and supportive with a maximum of three participants. You must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.
