We will start from scratch by introducing how to start programming in R and progress our way and learn how to read and write to files, manipulate data and visualise it by creating different plots - all the fundamental tasks you need to get you started analysing your data. During the course we will be working with one of the most popular packages in R; tidyverse that will allow you to manipulate your data effectively and visualise it to a publication level standard. This complimentary hands-on workshop is offered to PhD students and researchers at University of Cambridge who want to learn more about design of experiments (DOE) and data analysis. DOE skills are highly demanded by industry and still under-represented in many university curricula. Design of experiments is a practical and ubiquitous approach for exploring multifactor opportunity spaces, and JMP offers world-class capabilities for design and analysis in a form you can easily use without any programming. To properly uncover how inputs (factors) jointly affect the outputs (responses), DOE is the most efficient and effective way – and the only predictable way – of learning. Unlike the analysis of existing data, designed experiments can tell you about cause and effect, drive innovation and test opportunities by exploring new factor spaces. In addition to classical DOE designs, JMP also offers an innovative custom design capability that tailors your design to answer specific questions without wasting precious resources. Once the data has been collected, JMP streamlines the analysis and model building so you can easily see the pattern of response, identify active factors and optimize responses. In this course you will learn to understand why to consider DOE analyze experiments with a single categorical factor using analysis of variance (ANOVA) analyze experiments with a single continuous factor using regression analysis understand the difference between classical and optimal designs design, analyze and interpret screening experiments incl. Definitive Screening Design design, analyze and interpret experiments in response surface methodology augment designs for sequential experimentation apply robust optimization evaluate and compare designs understand advanced features like blocking, split-plot experiments and covariates The format of this course will be a mix of concept presentations, live demos and hands-on exercises. Most examples are inspired by chemistry and biotech, but can be easily transferred to other fields like materials science, agri-food science or engineering. A microbiological safety cabinet (MSC) is a vital piece of equipment that helps to prevent exposure to biological hazards. All containment laboratory users and their supervisors should know how to use MSCs effectively, what the standards are for the different levels of containment, and how the facilities are managed. This course will help both users and managers understand their responsibilities in creating a safe working area and provide both theory and practical knowledge on the safe and effective use of tissue culture (Class II) cabinets. |

This is a one-day specialised CAA approved training course aimed at those departments shipping biological materials by air (IATA). It will use the 2020 IATA Regulations and will cover the full classification, packaging, labelling and documentation required to ship the following goods:
It will also cover the requirements for the supplementary materials encountered, such as dry-ice, dry-shippers and samples that are in small amounts of potentially flammable, or toxic, preservative fluids. Successful candidates will receive a training certificate valid for two years, restricted only to the materials described above. For completeness, transport by road and rail etc will also be covered. |

The information and advice will be focused around managing your studentship in relation to time planning, managing your health, and understanding how your ESRC funding works. In particular, UKRI research councils are limited in their flexibility around extensions and it is important that all DTP PhD researchers are aware of these limitations but also know about the other resources they can potentially utilise at Cambridge to help them through the three years of their doctorate. We encourage everyone to attend. In addition, anyone who has health difficulties should come along to understand how this could impact on their PhD timeline and how planning at an early stage could be helpful. |
