Machine learning gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. It encompasses a broad range of approaches to data analysis with applicability across the biological sciences. Lectures will introduce commonly used algorithms and provide insight into their theoretical underpinnings. In the practicals students will apply these algorithms to real biological data-sets using the R language and environment.

Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship Webinar new Finished 11:00 - 12:00 N/A - MS Teams

During this period, PPD is keen to continue to promote development opportunities for University staff. This information webinar will help you to identify if you wish to progress your development by way of an Apprenticeship.

We are looking to explore what interest there is at this current time in the Property Maintenance Operative Level 2 apprenticeship and hope that there will be sufficient interest to establish a University-wide cohort. By establishing University-wide cohorts, we are looking to encourage more departments to use apprenticeships as a way to provide focused, professional development for staff. Any participants will also have the advantage of a peer group to work through the programme with.

The webinar will be presented by Cambridge Regional College (CRC), who will deliver this apprenticeship.

The primary role of a Property Maintenance Operative is to optimise property condition and quality and to ensure that buildings are kept in a safe, working condition. Property Maintenance Operatives need to maintain a high level of quality, providing maximum satisfaction to customers, clients, guests and team. They will understand the mechanism of buildings including: electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems and equipment. They will provide first and immediate response to fault finding, whilst maximising quality and ensuring cost effectiveness. They will ensure prevention of major damage that could result in extensive costs and minimise reactive intervention.

The sessions are informal and designed to offer people the chance to share their experiences and challenges. Participants are encouraged to continue conversations and network with their fellow participants.

This course is suitable for students who have studied or picked up Spanish at basic level and who want to revise and progress onto intermediate topics and language and to discover Hispanic culture. The main focus is learning through communication and interaction. We will get together from home with Zoom, which offers us many possibilities to watch videos, listen to audio, read texts, write (there is even a whiteboard!) and especially speak in small and large groups. ¡Te esperamos!

This session is aimed at University of Cambridge staff or students who have already had prior training in database searching and want to learn more about the features of the Scopus database. This intensive course is designed for students who have very limited or no previous knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL). The course aims to enable students to understand and use BSL effectively for purposes of practical communication with deaf or hard of hearing people, to develop understanding of the BSL sentence syntax and to learn more about a Deaf Culture.

Returning Confidently new Finished 11:00 - 12:00 N/A - online webinar

Some of us have been working at home since last March, others have been working full-time on-site since then with very reduced numbers of colleagues around, others have been doing a bit of both and some have been on furlough or flexi-furlough. At this point, national restrictions are easing and more changes to our ways of working lie ahead. How are you feeling about returning to the workplace? How are you feeling about other people returning?

Join this session to understand the scientific perspective about why these changes might be stressful, and identify the main sources of stress for you. Take some time to plan how you can manage these feelings and learn some techniques to help cope with the tough moments.

The session is followed by a three day Nudge Course. This is one technique per day to help attendees convert proven techniques into useful habits. Also, for 48 hours following the session, participants will have the opportunity to contact Joy, a mental health nurse with over 40 years’ experience to help signpost them onto a recognised next step. Further details will be provided on the day.

This event is for postdocs near the mid-point of their current contract at Cambridge.

The session has been designed specifically for postdocs at this key career stage and the aim is help you to position yourself for the next stage of your career (in academia or otherwise). The session provides an opportunity for you to reflect on your professional development activities so far and share experiences with others at a similar stage. The session will include information, guidance and tools to support you in your next steps by focusing on future goals and how you can use the remainder of your time to work towards them.  

This interactive online session will be broken down into 3 sections: 

1. Reflecting on your professional development activities to date and identifying further development you would like to achieve during the rest of your contract.

2. Sharing ideas of how to achieve your development goals with other mid-contract postdocs whilst focusing on key professional development topics specific for postdocs and sources of information, advice and support across the university.

3. Creating an individual action plan to ensure you know when and how to take the next steps during the remaining time as a postdoc.   These 3 sections will be covered in the first hour of the session. The final half hour will be open for those who wish to ask related questions and engage in informal discussion with the facilitators and other participants.

Funding Management Portal Training – Adding and Editing Funds new Finished 14:00 - 15:30 Online Live Training

This instructor-led session will introduce you to the new Cambridge University Funding Management Portal and teach you to add and edit your funds so that they can be published on the new Funding Search.

You will be given a demo of the new system, followed by an instructor-supported opportunity to enter a fund for yourself on a training test site. The objective of this introductory session is to give fund administrators training on the new system so that they can add and update their own funds over the summer, before the new Funding Search is published for applicants in September.

You must have the following items installed or available on your computer to participate.

1. The Teams desktop app installed on your computer.

2. You will also need a working webcam, speakers (or headset) and mic.

Note: You need to be connected to the Cambridge University network to access the training test site or the actual Funding Management Portal. If you are working in the office and connected directly to the Cambridge University, you should be able to automatically connect. If you are working from a remote location (including from home), you will need to connect via the UIS VPN service. Engaged Researcher Online - Creative Writing (2 of 2) Finished 10:00 - 11:45 Phoenix 2, Phoenix Building, New Museums Site

Have you ever wanted to get creative with your research – to discover how writing can bring a new perspective to your research? How your words can engage with new audiences about the academic research that you are passionate about?

This training will enable you to develop creative ways by which you can engage with the public, providing you with the resources to be more confident in developing, and sharing, creative writing responses to your area of research.

The course will introduce creative writing for poetry and prose, and textual writing for exhibition / display. It will discuss developing writing for performance and for publication and work with you to bring out the creative responses that lay within your own work. There will be the opportunity to receive written feedback throughout the week, to share your work at a final showcase, and to discuss your work in a 1-to-1 session with the course tutor on Wednesday 14th July (if requested in advance).

The training will be led by David Cain. David’s most recent book, Truth Street, was shortlisted for the prestigious Forward Prizes for Poetry (2019). David brings his writing experience together with a passion for public engagement - he currently leads the delivery of the Cambridge Festival.

The ourcambridge Supporting our Staff team have developed this session, to provide a follow up to the very popular ‘What do you value in life?’ workshop. In the first session, participants identified their own personal values and considered what they might mean for how they lived their life and went about their work. In this follow up session, participants will reflect further on their personal values and participate in some exercises that will help them to identify further positive actions they can take to achieve closer alignment to their values in a supportive and motivating environment.

Mental Health Aware course by MHFA England new Finished 13:00 - 17:00 Online Live Session

The pandemic has put a strain on everyone’s mental health. This training helps us to become more aware of the mental health of people around us, and will give people tools and ways to help other people who might be struggling, and ways to look after one's own mental health.

This half day online course is ideal for everyone who wants to increase mental health awareness, tackle stigma, and support wellbeing. Developed by Mental Health First Aid England who focus on delivery of quality assured, evidence based training programmes aimed at increasing mental health literacy.
