In this the first of three courses, this practical-based course is for people new to writing Web pages. Only the basics of HTML (hypertext mark-up language) will be covered. The course teaches how to write HTML from scratch using a basic Text Editor and focuses on content and structure as opposed to style. By the end of the course participants will have created four personal linked web pages. For those wishing to extend their knowledge the second course in this series Web Authoring (Level 2): CSS - Cascading Style Sheets for Beginners introduces CSS styling elements which will add colour and styling to the HTML web site created in this course. The third course in this series Web Authoring (Level 3): CSS - Cascading Style Sheets Responsive Web Design introduces Media Queries to make the web site responsive for use on both large screen and mobile phones. |

The course aims to give an introductory overview of High Performance Computing (HPC) in general, and of the facilities of the High Performance Computing Service (HPCS) in particular. Practical examples of using the HPCS clusters will be used throughout, although it is hoped that much of the content will have applicability to systems elsewhere. |
Following on from the Photoshop CC: Introduction (Level 1) course, this course covers some of the more advanced features of Adobe Photoshop CC, which is the latest version of the popular image manipulation and editing tool for graphics and design professionals and photographers. The course will explore some of the more advanced features of Photoshop. Techniques will be explained and demonstrated, and participants will then be given the opportunity to practice these for themselves. Please note: This course requires that you use your CRSid and Raven password to log into Adobe Creative Cloud. If you currently log in to use Microsoft Office, then the same login details are used, and you do not need to do anything except to know your Raven password. Otherwise, if you do not know your password, or have not changed your Raven password in the last three years, you must do so before attending the course, please go here: https://password.csx.cam.ac.uk/ you can set the same password. This course will introduce ATLAS.ti a Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) which supports qualitative and mixed methods research. It provides a means to collect, organise and analyse content from interviews, focus group discussions, surveys and audio. |

This course is part of the Scientific Computing series. No previous experience of shell scripting is required for this course; however some knowledge of the interactive use of the bash shell is a prerequisite (see Simple Shell Scripting for Scientists: Prerequisites for details). This course introduces shell scripting in bash for scientific computing tasks. Day one introduces very basic shell scripts in bash which process the command line in a simple fashion. Day two covers how to write more advanced shell scripts in bash. Day three covers how to make one's shell scripts more robust. At the end of each day one or more exercises are set. It is VERY IMPORTANT that attendees attempt these exercises before the next day of the course. Attendees should make sure that they have allowed themselves sufficient study time for these exercises between each day of the course. |

An informative and social event to celebrate the launch of a new University Developer Hub. University Information Services with support from developers across the University has been working on customising a University Developer Hub. The Hub is hosted using a GitLab application, with the aim to provide a valuable collaboration resource for developers and code users. There will be short presentations from the alpha testers who will share their experience and involvement in testing the Hub. You’ll have the opportunity to ask informal questions about the service and meet with like-minded professionals involved with developing. To celebrate the launch of the University Developer Hub, all attendees are welcome to stay for drinks and light refreshments served after the presentation. |

In this the second of three courses, this practical-based course follows on from Web Authoring (Level 1): HTML - For Beginners and is for anyone with a basic understanding of HTML. The course will introduce Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and show how they can (and should) be used effectively when creating web pages. The course teaches how to write CSS from scratch using a basic Text Editor. By the end of the course participants will have adapted the small website created in the 'HTML for Beginners' course consisting of four pages so that it is styled using a single Cascading Style Sheet. Course participants will have the opportunity to publish their web pages using DS-Web. For those wishing to extend their knowledge the third course in this series Web Authoring (Level 3): CSS - Cascading Style Sheets Responsive Web Design introduces Media Queries to make the web site responsive for use on both large screens and mobile phones. |
