This programme is designed to support academic and research leaders and managers with the skills and insights they need to lead others effectively. Group leaders and PIs/senior researchers with responsibility for others are particularly encouraged to attend.

It will enable participants to reflect on their current leadership style and provide techniques they can use to effectively manage a diverse range of perspectives and create an inclusive culture across the University. Those with responsibility for others have a key role to play in shaping a positive working environment, supporting progression and ensuring equality, including pay equality. Given the University's strategic priorities, it is critical that leaders and managers understand the impact of their decisions throughout the employment timeline and know how to reduce the risk of sex, race or other discrimination, whether explicit or implicit.

The programme is delivered in partnership with Pearn Kandola, experts in evidence-based inclusive leadership development.

This course provides users the opportunity to run General Ledger reports and how to interpret them when managing departmental funds.

Analysis of bulk RNA-seq data (ONLINE LIVE TRAINING) (2 of 3) Finished 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

PLEASE NOTE that until further notice, due to the evolving situation with Coronavirus no courses will be offered as classroom based at the Training Facility. The Bioinformatics Team be teaching the course live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We will be aiming to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout.

The aim of this course is to familiarize the participants with the primary analysis of RNA-seq data.

This course starts with a brief introduction to RNA-seq and discusses quality control issues. Next, we will present the alignment step, quantification of expression and differential expression analysis. For downstream analysis we will focus on tools available through the Bioconductor project for manipulating and analysing bulk RNA-seq.

These sessions are aimed at those who are brand new to HEAT (Higher Education Access Tracker) and who will want to be added to the live database as their institution’s Operational Lead or User with all Reports.

Radioactive Substances: An Introduction to Suitable and Safe Use CANCELLED 10:00 - 12:30 CIMR, Lecture Theatre

Anyone who is a first-time user of unsealed radioactive substances is expected to attend this acquaintanceship course before they begin the work. Users of radioactive substances who are new to the University should also attend. This course also acts as a refresher for experienced users and for users from other institutions or countries. There will be time for discussion and questions at the end of the session, and a self-assessment exercise of attendees’ core knowledge will be carried out.

What does it mean to be a public intellectual today? To convey ideas to diverse audiences requires skills in written and other forms of communication.

We will be looking at how reaching ‘outside’ audiences is more than a question or terminology of style; we need to understand their fundamental values, premises and interests concerning knowledge and information. This is crucial for research exchange and impact, but also has practical implications for managing your career within academia and beyond.

What might your research project look like if it were presented as a video game? What rules would structure a board game based on your work? What toys could you make to encourage people to play with your key concepts? This session introduces the basics of game design and models a method for identifying the rules and mechanics that structure playful experiences. Using a series of case studies, we will examine the intersection between academic research and game design, and discuss how playful thinking can facilitate innovation, experimentation, and sustained engagement.

Animations can be a powerful tool to convey a message and to capture your audiences attention and interest. By bringing movement into your visualisation you add a new dimension to your visual storytelling and the process can be incredibly creative. This course will introduce you to a range of animation techniques using simple techniques to get you started on animating your own research. No previous knowledge or special equipment required.

Monday session 1: - Introduction to animation with instructions on how to work on your own animation throughout the week

Friday Session 3: - showcase and presentation of the produced animations

Need to get up to speed quickly with Teams? Then join us in this friendly, fast-paced, introductory session to learn how to get up and running. Please note that the course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

You will:

  • Understand Teams, Channels and an overview of what is possible in the application
  • Chat in a group or one-to-one
  • Collaborate with colleagues. In Teams you can access, share, and edit Word docs, PowerPoint, and Excel files in real time

Cambridge Admissions Office have organised a series of briefing sessions in the coming weeks aimed at Schools Liaison Officers, Faculty/Department Outreach Staff, and any academics and staff members who will communicate with potential students.

This session will be useful to anybody who delivers academic workshops, particularly to young people at an outreach related event, though the skills developed will also help to improve general presentation and teaching skills. It will be delivered by The Brilliant Club (https://thebrilliantclub.org/)

The course will be split into three main sessions:

  • Working with Pre-Undergraduate Students -including understanding of disadvantage in the school, overview of WP (widening participation), managing behaviour and creating a positive environment.

Chemistry: CP1 - Career options after a PhD (1 of 2) Finished 11:30 - 12:30

PhD students have plenty of options once you graduate. In this interactive session we will look at the pros and cons of different career options. You will have a chance to think about what you want your work to do for you and what you can offer employers, and you will learn ways to find out more about jobs in which you are interested. It is recommended that you attend both sessions.

  • Session 1 - What jobs are out there and deciding what is ‘right’ for me?

Chemistry PhD students have many options after graduation. In this 1-hour session we will explore the pros and cons of different career choices. We will also consider how to assess which options would work for you.

  • Session 2 - Career options for PhDs in chemistry

In this second 1-hour session we will focus on generating specific job ideas, how you might structure your careers ‘research’, key questions to ask and timelines for starting your ‘search’ for your next step after Cambridge.

We are currently reformatting our Learning programme for remote teaching; this will require some rescheduling so bookings will reopen and new sessions will be created for online courses as soon as possible. In the interim we would encourage you to register your interest so as to be notified of the new schedule. Please be aware that we hope to run many of our courses online, but that this is dependent on staff availability and resources so please be aware we may have to postpone or cancel some sessions

This workshop will develop your coding practice from testing ideas to creating an efficient workflow for your code, data and analysis. If you are using Jupyter Notebooks (but even if you’re not) this workshop will demonstrate how to better manage your code using good programming practices, and package your code into a program that is easier and quicker to run for lots of data and more reliable.

Required preparation (instructions provided): Python 3 installed on laptop; a text editor or IDE installed on laptop; git installed on laptop and signed up for GitHub; a short internet-based exercise in working with the command line.

Core Statistics (6 of 6) Finished 14:00 - 17:00 GSLS Online Live Training

PLEASE NOTE that this course will be taught live online, with demonstrators available to help you throughout if have any questions. All lecture components will be recorded and uploaded to the course Moodle page so that you will be able to access that information even if technical or time zone restrictions means that you aren't able to join us for the live sessions.

This virtually delivered course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R or Python software environments. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the course focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the biological sciences.

There are three core goals for this course:

  1. Use R or Python confidently for statistics and data analysis
  2. Be able to analyse datasets using standard statistical techniques
  3. Know which tests are and are not appropriate

Both R and Python are free software environments that are suitable for statistical and data analysis.

In this course, we explore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypothesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The focus of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and developing robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying statistical theory

After the course you should feel confident to be able to select and implement common statistical techniques using R or Python and moreover know when, and when not, to apply these techniques.

The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence. Please note that Advanced Plus course features no formal summative assessment component and upon the completion successful completion students will be awarded a Certificate of attendance issued by the Language Centre.

At an advanced level, the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course.

One of the aims of the advanced level courses is also presentation skills as the courses aim to cater to the academic needs (i.e. research, conferences) of the students.
