PHEP is Cambridge's professional development programme for probationer University lecturers and new College teaching officers. With contributions from academic and key administrative staff from the collegiate University, the seminar provides a platform for orientation and exploration of the opportunities, cultures and conventions of the University of Cambridge.

The seminar is a core feature of PHEP and all probationer University lecturers are expected to participate over the whole of the seminar.

You are strongly recommended to attend the Seminar within the first two years of your appointment

This course focuses on the practical element of delivery. It will provide you with the opportunity to explore techniques for connecting emotionally and intellectually with an audience, along with overcoming nerves. You will look at how to handle questions effectively and practise vocal techniques.

Introduction to high-throughput sequencing data analysis (4 of 4) Finished 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

This course provides an introduction to high-throughput sequencing (HTS) data analysis methodologies. Lectures will give insight into how biological knowledge can be generated from RNA-seq, ChIP-seq and DNA-seq experiments and illustrate different ways of analyzing such data. Practicals will consist of computer exercises that will enable the participants to apply statistical methods to the analysis of RNA-seq, ChIP-seq and DNA-seq data under the guidance of the lecturers and teaching assistants. It is aimed at researchers who are applying or planning to apply HTS technologies and bioinformatics methods in their research.

There is growing expectation for business acumen in academics. This workshop provides you with insight and skills to work more effectively with industry. The aim is to develop project management skills in the context of industry academia collaborations (IAC).

In this workshop we explore a formal project development process from idea inception through to project implementation. You will practice project management tools and techniques and discuss cognitive and behavioural skills needed to implement them.

We will discuss current UK industry, government (BIS) and research council expectations of IAC and the existing funding opportunities.

The skills learned will support your effective interactions and well-managed projects with industry.

In addition we will cover basic computer programming in Matlab to enable you to write more efficient scripts.

Risk Assessment of Genetically Modified Organisms CANCELLED 10:00 - 13:00 Greenwich House, Jaffna Room

Are you actively involved in genetic modification risk assessment? This is a practical course designed to help you with this work. As part of the course you will look at the legal background and duties under GM legislation, consider the biological concepts required, and carry out risk assessments for GM projects using the University forms.

Questions to be answered by participants when booking a place:

  • Do you/will you work with GM plants?
  • Do you work with GMM's associated with plants?

Google Analytics: An Introduction Finished 10:00 - 12:00 Phoenix Teaching Room 1, New Museums Site

Initially there will be a talk and demonstration then there will be an opportunity to try out any techniques you have learned about. To this end, if you are interested in looking at analytics for your own site and you haven't yet obtained a code and installed it on your pages, you will need to do that before the course. If you are interested in interpreting data that is already being collected you won't have to worry about that. Bear in mind that there is a lag in data collection of 24 hours.

Springboard is a personal development programme for all women staff/graduate students. It will give you the opportunity to take stock and consider your personal and professional goals. Key areas covered include communication skills, assertiveness, self confidence, improving your work/life balance and developing positive skills and attitude. If you want to progress and develop, then this programme is for you.

The programme comprises four days over a three-month period and a workbook to be completed between sessions.
