The RD team are offering one-to-one meetings online over the coming weeks for all postdocs. These meetings will be tailored to your individual needs and provide an opportunity to consider and discuss topics relating to learning, skills and personal development. This is not an exhaustive list but topics may include a variety of issues including:

  • Managing your time whilst working from home
  • Collaborating effectively
  • Maintaining resilience and coping strategies
  • Reflecting on and identifying your key areas for development


Each meeting will last for up to 45 minutes and, given the present circumstances relating to Covid-19, will be conducted online using Teams or Zoom.

Virtual - Cognos Introduction (1 of 2) Finished 10:00 - 11:30 Finance Division, At Participant's Desk

Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts.

Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below.

What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above.

One-hour workshops focusing on Zoom essentials. Participants will learn how to:

  • Share content (e.g. Power Point presentations).
  • Share computer audio.
  • Create breakout rooms.
  • Integrate content from Moodle and / or Google Drive.

The workshops will be hands-on and participants (limited to 12 per session) will have the opportunity to practice all these features.

Medicine: Introduction to Literature Searching (for University) new Finished 14:00 - 16:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

A course specifically for University of Cambridge staff and students. Attendees will learn how to search medical/healthcare databases accessed with a Raven login (such as Medline and Embase) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. This course is delivered at an introductory/refresher level, and assumes you have had no prior training in how to search databases.

All attendees are required to have a Raven login. NHS staff wanting to learn similar material should book onto our 'Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching' course instead.

UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. You will be contacted by the training team with information about how to join the session remotely.

This course is designed for Training Administrators of a new provider on the University Training Booking System (UTBS) and it will take them through theory and practicals on how to administer their training programme on the UTBS. Need to get up to speed quickly with Teams? Then join us in this friendly, fast-paced, introductory session to learn how to get up and running. If you prefer a slower pace with more opportunity for practice then consider attending Teams Parts 1 - 4 (see Related courses below).

Please note that the course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

You will:

  • Understand Teams, channels and gain an overview of what is possible in the application. In Teams you can:
    • video/audio chat or message colleagues one-to-one or in a group
    • arrange and attend meetings
    • collaborate in real time with colleagues - access, share, and edit Word docs, PowerPoint, and Excel files
    • Add applications that you need to work with e.g. OneNote, Planner, Forms/surveys.

Uncertain and unpredictable situations induce a stress response in people. The good news is that there are mechanisms to manage that stress and adapt to the impact of these unpredictable times because you still need to progress your research, secure future funding, and make decisions on your research and career direction.

In this hour discussion we will explore mechanisms to manage our natural stress response to uncertainty; how to implement those mechanisms and better adapt. We will discuss two key resilience frameworks that will provide you with approaches to make incremental changes to attitude and action to help be more resilient to the unpredictable nature of our times.

Caroline Broad has been a skills trainer for career researchers for over ten years. She delivers 'Resilience for researchers' workshops, runs a local Happy cafe and is accredited as a Resilience Leadership Consultant.

Medicine: Virtual Ebooks Drop-in new Finished 13:00 - 14:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

During this session you will learn how to search for ebooks via iDiscover -- the University of Cambridge library catalogue -- look at a couple of the main medical ebook platforms, and learn where to find further help and information on ebooks.

This session will take place online via Zoom. The library will email you directly with the Zoom link the day before the session takes place. Please do not respond to the automated reminder emails -- instead, if you have questions, contact the library directly at library@medschl.cam.ac.uk.

Data Science School: Machine learning applications for life sciences (Online) charged (1 of 4) Finished 10:00 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout.

This School aims to familiarise biomedical students and researchers with principles of Data Science. Focusing on utilising machine learning algorithms to handle biomedical data, it will cover: effects of experimental design, data readiness, pipeline implementations, machine learning in Python, and related statistics, as well as Gaussian Process models.

Providing practical experience in the implementation of machine learning methods relevant to biomedical applications, including Gaussian processes, we will illustrate best practices that should be adopted in order to enable reproducibility in any data science application.
