This course prepares you to write a CV, job application and covering letter that stands out and makes employers take notice and to undertake a successful job search. You will learn what to include and exclude in your CV, how to choose the right format, how to tailor information to match job requirements, and how to deal with employment gaps, job hopping and/or lack of experience.

The course is highly participative, providing an opportunity to share experiences with others, as well as time to practise your skills.

Analysis of expression Proteomics data in R (IN-PERSON) (1 of 2) [Full] 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

This workshop focuses on expression proteomics, which aims to characterise the protein diversity and abundance in a particular system. You will learn about the bioinformatic analysis steps involved when working with these kind of data, in particular several dedicated proteomics Bioconductor packages, part of the R programming language. We will use real-world datasets obtained from label free quantitation (LFQ) as well as tandem mass tag (TMT) mass spectrometry. We cover the basic data structures used to store and manipulate protein abundance data, how to do quality control and filtering of the data, as well as several visualisations. Finally, we include statistical analysis of differential abundance across sample groups (e.g. control vs. treated) and further evaluation and biological interpretation of the results via gene ontology analysis. By the end of this workshop you should have the skills to make sense of expression proteomics data, from start to finish.

Do you have a deadline coming up or a piece of writing that’s long overdue? Or maybe some data analysis that keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list?

Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique.

These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment.

The retreats will take place several times per month throughout the academic year and you can attend as many as you like (within booking limits for each session).

Development & Alumni Relations: Onboarding Passport - Briefing for Line Managers (hybrid) new [Places] 12:00 - 13:00 Development and Alumni Relations: Great Ouse

The onboarding passport supports our new starters in developing their knowledge about their role, their team, CUDAR and the University. It has been designed to help them feel connected to other parts of CUDAR and understand how we fit within the Cambridge ecosystem.

It includes new and improved activities to create excitement and deepen their engagement. Much of the content is deigned to be self led so that the new starter can pace the content without becoming overwhelmed but there is a significant role that line managers will need to play in terms of keeping them on track, asking questions and prompting conversations that will solidify what they are learning along the way.

To support line managers we have also created a corresponding Line Manager Guide to ensure that you are clear on your responsibilities in the journey.

This briefing session will take a closer look through the passport and corresponding LM guide, in particular highlighting the key moments that line managers will engage with the journey.

Pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure) can have a devastating impact on women and their unborn child or children during pregnancy. However, it is becoming increasingly recognised that the effects of pre-eclampsia can remain with a woman throughout her life-course, placing her at an increased risk of heart disease and high blood pressure, well into her future. Is it pre-eclampsia which causes these effects? Or is pre-eclampsia simply a marker of an over-stressed system during pregnancy? This talk will explore the puzzling relationship between pregnancy, pre-eclampsia and women’s long-term cardiovascular health and explain how the University of Cambridge-led POPPY study hopes to provide answers to some of these questions.

Leadership Essentials is a key programme suitable for those with responsibilities for the work, behaviour and development of others. The programme aims to help managers refresh and build their skills and experience in this area, as well as clarifying key responsibilities of manager and leader. It focuses on critical areas, such as giving and receiving feedback effectively and handling challenging conversations, using leadership styles and models to support individuals and teams. The programme incorporates tutor input; opportunities for discussion, case studies, reflection and sharing of good practice with others with similar responsibilities. It also includes curated e-learning resources to support managers with their ongoing learning and development.

Participants are required to attend both half day sessions.
