Are you migrating from Hermes to Exchange Online and are using Outlook 365 desktop as your client for the first time? If so join us in this friendly, introductory session to learn how to get up and running with Outlook 365 Email and Calendar using the Desktop application for Windows, where we will take you through the basics of the Outlook 365. This course does not cover the Hermes migration tool or in-depth technical questions regarding Outlook and Exchange. For this information please see the Further Information for IT staff webpages. Medicine: Getting the best results - improving your database searching (for NHS staff only)

A course specifically for NHS staff. Attendees will learn how to search databases accessed with an Athens login (such as Medline, Embase and Cinahl) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. All attendees are required to have an NHS Athens login. University of Cambridge staff and students wanting to learn similar material should book onto the Introduction to Literature Searching (for University) course instead. UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout. This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core aspects of Python illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, attentive participants will be able to write simple Python programs and customize more complex code to fit their needs. Course materials are available here. Please note that the content of this course has recently been updated. This course now mostly focuses on core concepts including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. Concepts and strategies for working more effectively with Python are now the focus of a new 2-days course, Data Science in Python. Please note that if you are not eligible for a University of Cambridge Raven account you will need to book or register your interest by linking here. |
Second Year Recharge: Reconnect with Your PhD This four-day programme is designed to help you take a fresh and positive look at your work during the second year – a notoriously tricky stage to feel you have the clarity and motivation to keep going. This is true at the best of times, let alone during a global pandemic! We recommend that you attend all four sessions of the programme, but you are very welcome to book for single sessions, i.e. there is no requirement to sign up for the whole programme or to have completed the preceding sessions in order to book for a later one. For those who attend the morning session, there will also be an opportunity to attend an optional afternoon session, where we delve deeper into the content in a small group. The afternoon sessions will be limited to 30 people and will be available on a first come, first served basis. (Booking links for the afternoon session will be under 'joining instructions' in your booking confirmation email).

Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts. Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below. What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above. |

Dr Olivia Remes (Institute for Manufacturing) PhD found that living in a poor area increased anxiety disproportionally in women. She has also contributed to discussions around coping with anxiety and loneliness during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Dr Chris Rauh's (Department of Economics) recent work has shown that women have borne the financial brunt of the COVID-19 lockdowns in the UK and US. This event will explore the links between Olivia and Chris’ areas of expertise to examine whether women have experienced an increased financial burden during the COVID-19 Pandemic, resulting in an adverse effect on our mental health and wellbeing. The workshop activities will be led by Dr Laura Hall (Business Information Team). Participants will be provided with guidance on accessing and interpreting the statistical data available on Tableau, which will help you identify which student groups are less likely to be awarded Firsts or Good Honours degrees than their peers. Structured activities will help individuals see the awarding gaps in their local institutional contexts across the last 5 years, with opportunities for Q&A. Small group discussion will allow participants to compare findings and begin reflections on the reasons for these gaps.

Administered by the Language Centre, the AJ Pressland Fund offers bursaries of up to £1,000 to support language study abroad for students within the Schools of Biological Science, Clinical Medicine, Physical Science and Technology. Those applying for a Trinity College Language Bursary are also welcome to attend. The aim of this optional workshop is to support with choosing a short language course abroad. We can offer pointers for evaluating the options available and share information gleaned from students' feedback on courses that they have attended. Students should be planning to study a language overseas for up to 4 weeks during the Long Vacation and funds awarded may be used to support course fees, accommodation and travel as required. This intensive Persian course is designed particularly for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Persian language, culture and heritage. However the course can be equally useful for those who are interested in learning Persian for more general purposes. We offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce spoken and written language on variety of topics. The classes are going to be conducted more or less in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for speaking and listening practice in Persian. And the medium of class will swiftly change to Persian by the end of the term. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Persian and/or communicate in Persian with native speakers.
