The second stage is a Welcome to New Staff presentation event, hosted by Personal and Professional Development (PPD). The Welcome event aims to provide a broad introduction to all University staff, providing information about the University to enable you to get the most out of your time here. This event will be an online webinar. The event comprises:

  • A welcome and introduction to the University from a senior member of the University
  • A presentation providing an update on the University’s response to supporting staff during this pandemic, working from home, returning or continuing to work at the University

Leadership Essentials is a key programme suitable for those with responsibilities for others’ work, behaviour and development, which aims to help managers refresh and build their skills and experience in this area. As well as clarifying key responsibilities, it focuses on critical areas that some can find more difficult, such as giving and receiving feedback effectively and handling challenging conversations. The programme incorporates tutor input; opportunities for discussion, reflection and sharing of good practice with others with similar responsibilities. It also includes curated e-learning resources to support managers with their ongoing learning and development.

Participants are required to attend both half day sessions.

Communication Skills Coaching: Making an Impact (One-to-One) CANCELLED 09:30 - 10:30 N/A - MS Teams

Communicating clearly and being engaging can be challenging in any work environment. Doing so remotely can be even more difficult. Whether you’re teaching, leading meetings or preparing for an interview, this session will provide you with constructive feedback and tips to refine your speaking style, get your points across, and increase your personal impact. Coaching will “zoom in” on the areas you need to focus on, address any concerns you may have about your communication skills, and help you shape and deliver your message with clarity and confidence.

Participants may also find it useful to complete the Presentation Skills online module

Want to practice giving Teams Live Events? Then join us in this informal introductory session to manage and deliver a webinar. The course is not about presentation skills, it is to master the mechanics of managing the smooth transition between different presenters and content. The maximum number of participants for this course is limited to 2.

You must have the following items installed or available on your computer to participate:

1. The Teams desktop app installed on your computer.
2. The Teams Calendar available on the Teams interface. (You must be using Microsoft Exchange Online for your email to enable the Teams Calendar). Details on how to migrate from Hermes to Exchange can be found here.
3. The button on the Teams Calendar interface necessary to create a Teams Live Event. (To enable the button on your system you need to request the ability to create Live Events via the Self Service portal). Note! this can take up to 48 hours for the change to come into effect.

You will also need a working webcam, speakers (or headset) and mic.

You will:

  • Learn about Teams Live Events
  • Practice schedulling and delivering a Live Event. Please have a short PowerPoint and one other application ready to demonstrate, e.g a web site with video content

CULP: French Basic for Academic Purposes (LAP) (6 of 15) Finished 10:00 - 11:30 Zoom Video Communication Software

Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research.

The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion.

Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use French and practise reading aloud.

This module will introduce you to the theory and practice of multivariate analysis, covering Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and logistic regressions. You will learn how to read published results critically, to do simple multivariate modelling yourself, and to interpret and write about your results intelligently.

Half of the module is based in the lecture theatre, and covers the theory behind multivariate regression; the other half is lab-based, in which students will work through practical exercises using statistical software.

To get the most out of the course, you should also expect to spend some time between sessions having fun by building your own statistical models.

Do you have a deadline coming up or a piece of writing that’s long overdue? Or maybe some data analysis that just keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list?

Alongside everything else that needs to fit in with our busy research lives, it can be hard to schedule devoted time in which to sit, think, and write. Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to fend off procrastination and beat writer's block. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges and work in a focused way using the established Pomodoro technique.

This Academic Writing Month we invite you to bring along your virtual self and dedicate 2.5 hours to writing in a supportive setting with colleagues from institutions across the UK. There will be time to discuss your writing goals and make new connections.

There are four sessions (3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th November). You may sign up for one or multiple sessions.

These sessions are being hosted by King's College London and will be facilitated by Dr Jessica Davidson, Research Staff Development and Engagement Officer in the KCL Centre for Research Staff Development

New to online collaboration? This course aims to take the mystery out of managing your files online, syncing these to your computer and introduces a few useful functions that you may not have discovered.

Please note that the course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

You will:

  • Learn various online file management techniques and understand SharePoint storage
  • Use the assistive technologies within Teams
  • Gain a few tips to speed your work

Principal Investigators, research group heads and supervisors have duties and responsibilities both in law and under University Policy where the health and safety of group members (and others that may be influenced by their research activities) are concerned. Have you wondered how research data is used after it has been shared publicly (as open data)? What are some of the impacts of sharing data and of its subsequent reuse by others? Does the researcher or research group who shared their data openly benefit in any way from its reuse? What are the essential properties of a reusable dataset? In this session on ‘Open data sharing and reuse’ we will explore these questions amongst others via case studies presented by a panel of four University of Cambridge researchers from various fields – neuroscience, political sociology, medical imaging and law. All four have shared their research datasets as open data and had their data reused by others. Presentation of the case studies will be followed by questions from attendees and discussion.

This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2 level upwards) a chance to practise speaking French with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level.

Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research.

The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion.

Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use French and practise reading aloud.

Communication Skills Coaching: Making an Impact (One-to-One) Finished 15:30 - 16:30 N/A - MS Teams

Communicating clearly and being engaging can be challenging in any work environment. Doing so remotely can be even more difficult. Whether you’re teaching, leading meetings or preparing for an interview, this session will provide you with constructive feedback and tips to refine your speaking style, get your points across, and increase your personal impact. Coaching will “zoom in” on the areas you need to focus on, address any concerns you may have about your communication skills, and help you shape and deliver your message with clarity and confidence.

Doing Multivariate Analysis (DMA-3) (2 of 4) Finished 16:00 - 18:00 SSRMP Zoom

This module will introduce you to the theory and practice of multivariate analysis, covering Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and logistic regressions. You will learn how to read published results critically, to do simple multivariate modelling yourself, and to interpret and write about your results intelligently.

Half of the module is based in the lecture theatre, and covers the theory behind multivariate regression; the other half is lab-based, in which students will work through practical exercises using statistical software.

To get the most out of the course, you should also expect to spend some time between sessions having fun by building your own statistical models.

Open access long-form scholarship is an increasingly important area of scholarly communication. New business models have been devised to support the publication of open access monographs, while funders continue to implement OA policies for the books that they fund (such as the recently announced UKRI policy). Yet one possible roadblock to a sustainable open access future is the book processing charge. As open access books require significant up-front investment for publishers, BPCs have rapidly become one of the dominant models for funding open access book publication. In the humanities, where funding is limited, BPCs have the potential to make open access a preserve of only those that can afford to pay, potentially excluding junior scholars, unfunded researchers and colleagues from universities outside the Global North. Alternative models are therefore needed for any wholesale move to open access for books.

In light of the recent UKRI policy requirement for open access books, this session will discuss the challenges around open access book publishing and the alternatives to the book processing charge that publishers have developed, highlighting experiments in funding no-fee open access book publishing. It will feature leading experts and practitioners in open access book publishing and a discussion with members of the Cambridge community.
