Publishing and communicating as a public intellectual (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences)

What does it mean to be a public intellectual today? To convey ideas to diverse audiences requires skills in written and other forms of communication. We will be looking at how reaching ‘outside’ audiences is more than a question or terminology of style; we need to understand their fundamental values, premises and interests concerning knowledge and information. This is crucial for research exchange and impact, but also has practical implications for managing your career within academia and beyond. |

What might your research project look like if it were presented as a video game? What rules would structure a board game based on your work? What toys could you make to encourage people to play with your key concepts? This session introduces the basics of game design and models a method for identifying the rules and mechanics that structure playful experiences. Using a series of case studies, we will examine the intersection between academic research and game design, and discuss how playful thinking can facilitate innovation, experimentation, and sustained engagement. |

Animations can be a powerful tool to convey a message and to capture your audiences attention and interest. By bringing movement into your visualisation you add a new dimension to your visual storytelling and the process can be incredibly creative. This course will introduce you to a range of animation techniques using simple techniques to get you started on animating your own research. No previous knowledge or special equipment required. Monday session 1: - Introduction to animation with instructions on how to work on your own animation throughout the week Wednesday Session 2: - Mentoring time for questions or one-on-one advise Friday Session 3: - showcase and presentation of the produced animations |

Intercultural Communication

Research in the 21st century is global, and research teams are intercultural. 35% of Cambridge research students are from outside the EU; and postdocs are the most diverse group by nationality, representing almost 100 countries. This diversity is one of the University’s biggest strengths. Yet intercultural communication is not without its pitfalls and misunderstandings. It takes conscious discipline to think about one’s own cultural assumptions and to try to make sense of others'. This half-day workshop will give you some tools to help identify where national culture might be having an influence on your professional and social interactions, where common misunderstandings can occur, and how to address potential challenges. The content of the session is informed by research form intercultural studies and refers to culture as a framework of shared values, attitudes and behaviours. It explores the nature of generalisations and the relationship between culture and personal values. |

The Engaged Researcher: Playshop - Devising and Pitching Games Inspired by Academic Research

In this hands-on session, we will be working in teams to develop pitches and prototypes for interactive experiences based on our research. You will be guided through the process of ideas generation, modelling, and playtesting, and we will conclude by pitching our game designs to each other. These games can be analogue or digital, and no previous or coding experience is required. However, you must have attended the introduction session ‘Game Changers: Using Game Design to Promote Playful Engagement with Academic Research’. |

However, the exact role of the supervisor is often unclear and sometimes it may feel as though you are not getting the support you need. This can be frustrating for students and supervisors alike, and can lead to a negative doctoral experience. |

A research video can be a great way to get your message across to your collaborators, your friends, and the wider world as well as being a condition of some funding bodies. But it isn't easy to do well - and this is where this course will make a difference. Come along and learn the skills needed to plan, shoot & edit high quality footage for research videos so that your video can stand out from the crowd. You just need yourself, a camera phone and your enthusiasm! |
