This interactive workshop is designed to give an overview and introduction to mentoring, informing participants about what mentoring is, giving them the opportunity to explore the key benefits for mentors and mentees, learn some key skills needed to both mentor and be mentored effectively and become familiar with some simple models, tools and techniques to support the mentoring partnership and maximise its value and impact. |

PLEASE NOTE that until further notice, due to the evolving situation with Coronavirus no courses will be offered as classroom based at the Training Facility. The Bioinformatics Team be teaching the course live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We will be aiming to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout. This two days course will focus on the theory and applications of metagenomics, for the analysis of complex microbiomes (microbial communities). The course will include theoretical (~40%) and practical (~60%) training. We will start with the fastest, simplest and cheapest amplicon based methods and will go up to the Hi-C metagenomics methods that give highly detailed results on the complex microbial communities. The practical component will cover bioinformatics analysis of metagenomics. Topics: • The what: definitions of public engagement, who are the public, what activities count as engagement, what are the goals? • The why: University commitment to PE, REF, Funders • The how: the Logic Model approach to planning PE, practical considerations, moving engagement online and opportunities at the University. Description - This session is designed for PhD students in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The session will include a brief introduction to copyright and how this relates to re-use of images. The advantages of creative commons licences will be described with demonstrations of websites that specialise in CC0 images. The benefits of ARTSTOR as a specialist image database will be explained. Dr Lorraine de la Verpilliere will explain using case studies how to copyright-clear images for publication and give tips on the best ways to achieve this. There will be time for questions. |

Publishing a protocol -- stating in advance the search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, data analysis and other evaluative techniques -- is a core requirement for conducting a systematic review. The process of writing this protocol will also mean you have written in advance a large chunk of what will need to go into the finished systematic review, saving you a huge amount of time. This session will cover the contents and types of information you will need to provide in your protocol, and will give attendees the opportunity to write a draft protocol, as well as highlighting helpful resources and further support. UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. You will be contacted by the training team with information about how to join the session remotely. |

The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level. Participants from French Advanced CULP are warmly invited to attend the French Conversation Hour. Lockdown / COVID Q&A for Postdocs

We have already been fielding questions about contract / funding extensions, life after lockdown, balancing working from home with parental duties, how to work effectively from home and many other topics, so please ask us anything that you would like to know. Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading Spanish documents that they have come across or may meet in their research. The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion. Core Statistics

PLEASE NOTE that this course will be taught live online, with demonstrators available to help you throughout if have any questions. All lecture components will be recorded and uploaded to the course Moodle page so that you will be able to access that information even if technical or time zone restrictions means that you aren't able to join us for the live sessions. This virtually delivered course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R or Python software environments. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the course focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the biological sciences. There are three core goals for this course:
Both R and Python are free software environments that are suitable for statistical and data analysis. In this course, we explore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypothesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The focus of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and developing robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying statistical theory After the course you should feel confident to be able to select and implement common statistical techniques using R or Python and moreover know when, and when not, to apply these techniques. |

Anyone who is a first-time user of unsealed radioactive substances is expected to attend this acquaintanceship course before they begin the work. Users of radioactive substances who are new to the University should also attend. This course also acts as a refresher for experienced users and for users from other institutions or countries.
