IOSH Managing Safely
![]() Managing Safely is ideally suited to managers, research supervisors, administrators with safety responsibilities and Departmental Safety Officers across all sectors of the University. It leads to a nationally recognised and accredited qualification. Please note to be successful in gaining the qualification delegates will need to pass an assessment on day 3 of the course and complete a risk assessment project to be handed in at a later date. CDH Basics: Sustaining your data
![]() Ensuring long-term access to digital data is often a difficult task: both hardware and code decay much more rapidly than many other means of information storage. Digital data created in the 1980s is frequently unreadable, whereas books and manuscripts written in the 980s are still legible. This session explores good practice in data preservation and software sustainability and looks at what you need to do to ensure that the data you don’t want to keep is destroyed.

New to, or confused about online file storage and collaboration? This course aims to take the mystery out of managing your files online, how to set file permissions and you will have an understanding of online file management in SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive.

Resilient Leadership in Action is a nationally recognised, practical training programme delivered online in collaboration with several other institutions (including hosts King's College London and University College London). This programme offers a unique opportunity to reshape your ideas about being a leader and expand your leadership skills, supported by experienced coaches and fellow researchers from different disciplines and institutions. The programme will also help you to:
What happens during the course? This course will support you to develop a range of leadership skills through the act of applying them, rather than focusing on leadership theory. Activities The course is based around seven activities, the first six of which are designed to explore a different aspect of leadership and provide a practical insight into how leadership works. In the final activity, you will address a leadership activity that you can continue beyond the course. You will work with others in teams of six with a coach to help you make sense of the activities.
Buddies and home groups Throughout the course you will work alongside your "buddy", who is another course participant. Together you will share your experiences and provide mutual support, developing key co-coaching skills in the process. You will also have a “home group” where you consolidate your learning. Social Network Analysis
![]() Social Network Analysis (SNA) is “a distinct research perspective in the behavioural and social sciences” because it elevates relationships as the primary unit of analysis when attempting to understand and explain social phenomena (Wasserman and Faust, 1994, p. 4). This methods module will introduce you to network research tools used to explore the social constructs that surround all of us, continuously facilitating and frustrating our individual ambitions. Each of our three sessions will focus on a primary component of modern SNA: relational data collection, network visualisation, and descriptive network statistics and modelling. We will use real relational datasets from historical network studies. Participants will also be encouraged to develop their own relational data and complete a basic descriptive analysis and network visualisation of their data. This module will make use of web-based tools and open-source options in the R environment. However, no previous training in SNA methods or R will be assumed by the instructor. |

Striking the balance between good writing and following best academic practice through referencing can be a bit of a headache. In this session, we will demonstrate how referencing can help you structure your work as well as sharing techniques to support you in keeping your writing process flowing without any extra stress when it comes to submitting your thesis. We will provide a live demonstration of the reference management tool Zotero to give you an idea of how tools can do some of the heavy lifting for you. |

During change we often focus on what will be delivered and if it will be right for the job, but we often focus less on the need to support, reassure, and motivate those impacted by change – the people side of change. This short session for staff with people-management responsibilities (including PIs, supervisors and team leads) will explore approaches to the people side of change in the context of the University. Whilst high-level sponsorship provides senior leadership and the rationale for change, research shows that direct line managers have the most influence on how their team respond to change by helping to support people in understanding, preparing for, and adopting changes in working life and practice. “Change happens one person at a time.” Prosci.com. Using the HR Transformation Programme and the introduction of myHR as an example, we will look at how the approaches we are using to support colleagues across the University can be applied to the changes you may be leading in your team or area. Join us to consider skills and techniques for supporting people through change, using consistent language to help build our individual and collective change capability, for the everyday changes and for the more significant ones. Yoga with Daisy Worzencraft is primarily about having fun, giving things a go, and trying - with a sense of humour and a smile on your face! It's a non competitive practice, with modifications for different levels. All she asks is that you try, and that you practice with a sense of pleasure and enjoyment, rather than expectation, frustration and tension. For Daisy, Yoga has been a consistent friend in her life - especially in times of need - and had nothing to do with perfecting poses! This is a supported group for PhD students who are managing caring responsibilities alongside their studies. It will be co-facilitated by the Inclusive Learning and Development Manager and a current PhD student who is also managing a caring role. Caring can include a wide range of experiences and responsibilities and involve providing support for both children and adults. Objectives for this group:

Data Visualisation Using Python
![]() The module explores Good Data Visualisation (GDV) and graph creation using Python. In this module we demystify the principles of data visualisation, using Python software, to help researchers to better understand and reflect how the “5 Principles” of GDV can be achieved. We also examine how we can develop Python’s application in data visualisation beyond analysis. Students will have the opportunity to apply GDV knowledge and skills to data using Python in an online Zoom, self-paced, practical workshop. In addition there will be post-class exercises and a 1-hour asynchronous Q&A forum on Moodle Forum. |
Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading Russian documents that they have come across or may meet in their research. CULP: French Advanced
![]() With effect from August 2022 CULP Advanced level students will be included in the population for the HESA student return. We obtain much of the information required via the annual student registration exercise. CULP students, who are not currently following another course of study, will receive an email inviting them to complete Registration. At the start of the student registration process there is further information about the data collection for statutory purposes and the relevant privacy notices from the University and HESA. The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence. At an advanced level, the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course. One of the aims of the advanced level courses is also presentation skills as the courses aim to cater to the academic needs (i.e. research, conferences) of the students. More detailed information is available on our website. NB: Advanced courses are official, award-bearing University qualifications. Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research. The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion. This course is designed for learners who have very limited or no previous knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL). The course aims to enable individuals to understand and use BSL effectively for purposes of practical communication with deaf or hard of hearing people, to develop understanding of the BSL sentence syntax and to learn more about a Deaf Culture. Please note this course is not credit-bearing and so cannot be used as part of a Tripos. |
