A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

PLEASE NOTE that until further notice, due to the evolving situation with Coronavirus no courses will be offered as classroom based at the Training Facility. The Bioinformatics Team will be teaching the course live online in conjunction with the presenters.

Have you heard about High Performance Computing, but are not sure what it is or whether it is relevant for your work? Would you like to use a HPC, but are not sure where to start? Are you using your personal computer to run computationally demanding tasks, which take long and slow down your work? Do you need to use software that runs on Linux, but don't have access to a Linux computer? If any of these questions apply to you, then this course might be for you!

Knowing how to work on a High Performance Computing system is an essential skill for applications such as bioinformatics, big-data analysis, image processing, machine learning, parallelising tasks, and other high-throughput applications.

In this course we will cover the basics of High Performance Computing, what it is and how you can use it in practice. This is a hands-on workshop, which should be accessible to researchers from a range of backgrounds and offering several opportunities to practice the skills we learn along the way.

As an optional session for those interested, we will also introduce the (free) HPC facilities available at Cambridge University (the course is not otherwise Cambridge-specific).

New to online collaboration? This course aims to take the mystery out of managing your files online, syncing these to your computer and introduces a few useful functions that you may not have discovered.

Please note that the course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

You will:

  • Learn various online file management techniques and understand SharePoint storage
  • Use the assistive technologies within Teams
  • Gain a few tips to speed your work

If you book:

  • Add the event to your calendar by following the link in your booking confirmation email and click Add to Calendar.
  • Install the Microsoft Teams app. (It is possible to join using Edge or Chrome but there is less functionality when using a browser).
  • Important: The instructor cannot troubleshoot access to Microsoft Teams on the day of the course. If you are in an institution that is managing their own Teams tenancy (CAMENT, JBS, medschl and some of the colleges) then you may not have access to the files or calendar used in the course. Please contact the instructor in advance to discuss this.
  • If you are using Hermes for your email you will not be able to access the Teams calendar used in the course.
  • It's advisable to make a test call in advance of the session.
  • The course will start promptly at the time shown but will be open up to 30 minutes beforehand should you wish to check your audio and visual setup or meet your instructor.

Writing at postgraduate level

In this series of four sessions we’ll be taking an in-depth look at various aspects of writing at postgraduate level. Each session will be 90mins, with 30mins at the end for questions and discussion.

Whilst they have been designed as a set of sessions, with each building on from the previous, the individual sessions have been designed to be standalone – which means that you can attend the whole series or just those that particularly speak to you.


Workshop 2: The University’s criterion ‘clearly written’ – what this means

If you’ve ever had a look at the Cambridge Student webpages as to the requirements of postgraduate writing submitted for assessment, you’ll see that the University has only one criterion – and this is that it is ‘clearly written.’ At first glance, this seems both explicit and unequivocal as clarity in all its forms is surely the bedrock not only of postgraduate study, but of academia itself. Yet on further scrutiny, whilst there may be an instinctive consensus that this is a cardinal criterion for postgraduate writing, when it comes to defining what this actually means and how we are supposed to attain it, the matter is far less perspicuous. And indeed, clearly written is not simply an assessment criterion at Cambridge, as the vast majority of guides to academic writing rhapsodise about clarity as an assumed mutually acknowledged objective. Yet rarely is this criterion unpacked.

And so in this second session, we’ll be looking at doing just that – by considering what academics see as the central tenet of ‘clearly written’, namely, argument, and also in what ways the rhetorical expectations of ‘clearly written’ in English may differ from the expectations in other languages.

This series of drop in sessions has been designed to support both mentees and mentors who are taking part in the ourcambridge self-match mentoring scheme. They are entirely optional and you can attend as many or as few as you would like. To ensure that everyone is able to contribute to the sessions we are limiting the number of places for each session to 20. Where sessions are specifically designed for either the mentees or the mentors, this will be made clear (if you are both, you are welcome to attend both). The sessions will be interactive and focus around key discussion topics. For some sessions, we may contact you and ask you to watch a short 5-10 minute film beforehand.

UIS Learning and Development: Speed Mentoring for UIS New Starters new Finished 11:00 - 12:00 UIS Online Courses - instructor-led

For the first time in UIS, we are offering our new starters the opportunity to be involved in a virtual speed mentoring event. This energetic learning and networking activity will provide the opportunity to speak to some of UIS’ senior leaders and managers from different disciplines.

Fun introductory course to Spanish. This course is for those with little or no previous knowledge of Spanish. Communicative context, with videos, audio, texts and conversation.

This course will be taught online: there will be three classes per week, each lasting for two hours. The classes will be taught over Zoom which is a user-friendly interface that is easy and free to use. It also allows for collaborative work.

Senior Leader Level 7 Apprenticeship Webinar new Finished 14:00 - 15:30 N/A - MS Teams

An information webinar providing information on the offers available through two of our approved training providers, Cranfield University and Anglia Ruskin University. Both University’s will present their individual offers of the Senior Leader Level 7 programme with the option of additional elements including a PG Dip or MBA.

The Senior Leader Apprenticeship (SLA) course offers an exciting opportunity to develop and hone your leadership skills, make a real impact in the workplace, and support your future career aspirations. The course is ideal if you are new to a leadership or senior management role and applicable to a wide range of settings. You will have the option to study either a Postgraduate Diploma or MBA in Management and Leadership while you work, and achieve Senior Leader status.

The purpose of the webinar will be to provide you with an overview of all programme options available to you, and will give you the opportunity to ask any questions, enabling you to make an informed decision on your future career development.

The planned programme start date will be January 2022.

During this interactive session the ourcambridge Simplifying our Processes team will look at how habits can be established and how this can be applied to Lean tools and techniques, so helping to embed Continuous Improvement across the University. We will then discuss the impact that this could have on wellbeing.

In this session we will explore the complex and nuanced ways technology can keep us awake at night. Touching on the role of blue light but discovering other elements that contribute to our lack of sleep: addictive social media algorithms and the effect of different types of digital media.

About the Trainer

Dr. Michael Grandner is a licensed clinical psychologist, board-certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine. He is the Director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona and Director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at the Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson. Dr. Grandner is Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, Medicine, Nutritional Sciences, and Clinical Translational Science at the University of Arizona. He is an internationally-recognized expert in sleep health, has over 200 academic publications, and frequently consults with health, technology, athletics, and nutritional companies and organizations regarding sleep, health, and performance. Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts.

Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below.

What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we work forever. One of the biggest challenges that employers face is how to navigate new hybrid ways of working that deliver both improved productivity and a happier, healthier workforce. Medicine: Getting the best results - improving your database searching (for NHS staff only) new Finished 14:00 - 16:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

A course specifically for NHS staff. Attendees will learn how to search databases accessed with an Athens login (such as Medline, Embase and Cinahl) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography.

All attendees are required to have an NHS Athens login. University of Cambridge staff and students wanting to learn similar material should book onto the Introduction to Literature Searching (for University) course instead.

UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. You will be contacted by the training team with information about how to join the session remotely.
