Machine learning gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. It encompasses a broad range of approaches to data analysis with applicability across the biological sciences. Lectures will introduce commonly used algorithms and provide insight into their theoretical underpinnings. In the practicals students will apply these algorithms to real biological data-sets using the R language and environment.

You don’t think you are creative? Think again! This course is all about discovering easily accessible methods of visual storytelling to make your research more engaging. Visualisations are key to successful research story telling (and often research processes itself). They can help engage wide audiences effectively as well as communicate research quickly and intuitively to a wide range of audiences. This course is an introduction to a variety of different approaches to visual research storytelling. Topics range from images for social media to visual abstracts for publications. The trainer is working with you personally to develop your new creative skills and to get started with your very own research visualisation.

Apprenticeship Webinar - Leadership and Management Level 5 Finished 10:00 - 11:00 N/A - online webinar

During this lockdown period, PPD is keen to continue to promote development opportunities for University staff. This information webinar will help you to identify if you wish to progress your development by way of an Apprenticeship.

We are looking to explore what interest there is at this current time in this Leadership Level 5 apprenticeship and hope that there will be sufficient interest to establish a University-wide cohort. By establishing University-wide cohorts, we are looking to encourage more departments to use apprenticeships as a way to provide focused professional development for staff. Participants will have the advantage of a peer group to work through the programme with. Cambridge University Press and Cambridge Assessment are also potentially interested in joining in with this.

The webinar will be presented by Jennifer Dix of Corndel, who will deliver these apprenticeships.

For this cohort to run, there is a minimum of 18-20 people required. Depending on the level of interest shown, it is intended that the apprenticeship will start as soon as possible. Entry to these cohorts will be by application and is open to all University employees who meet the eligibility criteria.

An Introduction to Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessment CANCELLED 11:30 - 13:00 Greenwich House, Minsk Room

This training is intended for staff and post graduate students who regularly use DSE to help prevent or reduce the risk of possible health problems arising from computer use. The training is also aimed at those responsible within departments for assisting with the DSE risk assessment process. The course will provide an understanding of the DSE Regulations 1992 (as amended 2002) and discuss employer's and employee's duties regarding the assessment of DSE workstations. There will be theory and a practical demonstration. The training will allow time to discuss some of the common health problems and concerns that may be associated with poor workstation set-up with examples of possible solutions.

This course is suitable for students who have studied or picked up Spanish at basic level and who want to revise and progress onto intermediate topics and language and to discover Hispanic culture. This short session will provide an understanding of the principles, tools and techniques involved in Process Analysis with a view to improving business process effectiveness and efficiency. Would you like to try some sculpture with materials you already have around the home?

Soap carving is ideal as it is an easy and cheap way to try your hand at some carving. In this very relaxed session, we will be using Barbara Hepworth as our inspiration to create some soap carvings.

No experience necessary – this is a light-hearted, fun session where you are encouraged to take some time out of your day to enjoy yourself.

All you need is:

  • Pencil and paper
  • A bar of cheap soap – or a few bars if you have them
  • Scrapers and peelers – you can use vegetable peelers, scissors, paperclips and any similar objects

Have you ever wished you could get 10 minutes with a senior colleague to ask their advice on how they would handle something? Have you ever wondered how others approach challenging problems? This is your opportunity to ask. We are bringing together a panel of senior managers and leaders from across the University for a special speed mentoring session so that they can offer you their support and advice.

Speed mentoring offers you the opportunity for a series of short, focused conversations about a specific question or issue you are struggling with. You will rotate around four different mentors, spending around 10 minutes with each, to gain different perspectives on an issue you are seeking to resolve or a project you are trying to progress.

Game Design: an introduction for researchers [remote delivery] new (2 of 4) Finished 16:00 - 16:45 Cambridge Digital Humanities Online

Emma Reay is a third-year PhD researcher at the University of Cambridge and an associate lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University. Her current project explores depictions of children in videogames, and her research interests include representation studies, children's digital media, gaming and education, and playful activism.

Adam Dixon is a game designer and writer who makes both physical and digital games. He has worked on everything from big public games that involve running around cities to narrative video games about learning scientific skills. Much of his work has involved working with museums and research organisations such as the Wellcome Trust, Science Museum, Nottingham Trent University and the V&A. This has included designing games, using play for public research engagement and most recently, teaching teenagers to create digital games for Wellcome Collection’s Play Well exhibition. Outside of that he works and releases his own games including roleplaying games, LARPs and interactive fiction.

This online course will introduce participants to the practice of game design. It will explore the different ways that digital and analogue games are designed, particularly how you can design with intent to communicate a mood, theme or message. Participants will learn game design skills - such as boxing-in, design documents and prototyping – alongside opportunities to test them out by creating their own short games. Examples will focus on game design in research-related contexts, including using games as part of your research process and to communicate research outcomes to diverse audiences.

The sessions focus on game design, how to shape mechanics and play experiences, so no technical skills are needed. Participants will create their short games using both non-digital tools and simple, free software that will be taught in the sessions.

Professional Services Career Development Programme new POSTPONED 09:00 - 13:00 Greenwich House, Edmonton Room

A new three part programme to support career progression for Professional Services staff:

Part 1

This highly interactive workshop will enable you to step back from the ‘day-to-day’ and focus on your career objectives, short and long term. You will have the opportunity to explore what development opportunities you could grasp and what networks might assist you. You will also have the opportunity to consider what’s holding you back and how you can overcome these barriers to fulfill your career aspirations. You will leave the workshop with a personal career plan in draft format, that you will be able to explore in greater depth during the second part of the programme.

Part 2

An hour-long one-to-one career coaching session provided by a professional career coach from Penna, to take place on 6th, 7th, or 8th July. The booking link will be circulated for participants on the afternoon of Thursday 25th June. If you do not receive the booking link on that date please contact PPD.

Part 3

Access to an Online Career Development Tool designed to further support career development and progression. The tool enables you to assess your skills and behavioural attributes against the levels required for your current role, and for roles that you may wish to progress into in the future. It also identifies areas for professional development to support your career development. Guidance on accessing and using the tool will be sent to you at the end of the month in which you attend the workshop.

This one-day course focuses on the structure of good scientific writing. Including writing exercises as an integral part of the workshop, we will look at the practical process of writing, the nature of scientific publishing, and the importance of editing. The day will finish with a group editing session in which you apply the ideas you have learnt by editing each other's work.

For the group editing session you will need to write a 300-word abstract about your work in advance, and bring it with you as a printout (see 'Prerequisites' below for details).

REGISTRATION starts at 9.00am on the day. Please ensure you arrive on time as latecomers may be refused entry.

Would you like to learn the skills and techniques of group coaching and see how it can support postdoc development, productivity and progression?

This workshop provides an opportunity to learn about and experience group coaching within a supportive, safe environment alongside other postdocs. We will use tools and techniques first introduced in Postdocs: Introduction to Coaching and Mentoring and Postdocs: Self-Coaching for Professional Development to support and facilitate you to coach others and be coached to progress your ideas. This workshop is intended for those wishing to set up peer group coaching in their own professional contexts.

This can be attended as an individual workshop but we strongly recommend that you attend it as part of a series starting with Postdocs: Introduction to Coaching and Mentoring and Postdocs: Self-Coaching for Professional Development.

Outcomes:

  • Discover how the model of coaching in group situations can support postdoc development.
  • Experience a short term group coaching situation.
  • Identify when a group coaching situation could be useful in your specific context and how to set one up successfully for you and your colleagues.

Fun introductory course to Spanish. This course is for those with little or no previous knowledge of Spanish. Communicative context, with videos, audio, texts and conversation.

This course will be taught online: there will be three classes per week, each lasting for two hours. The classes will be taught over Zoom which is a user-friendly interface that is easy and free to use. It also allows for collaborative work.

This course will introduce graduate students, early-career researchers, and professionals in the humanities to the technologies of image recognition and machine vision, including recent developments in machine vision research in the past half-decade. The course will seek to combine a technical understanding of how machine vision systems work, with a detailed understanding of the possibilities they open to research and study in the humanities, and with a critical exploration of the social, political and ideological dimensions of machine vision.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the basic tasks of machine vision, such as Image Classification, Object Detection, Image-to-Image Translation, Image Captioning, Image Segmentation etc.
  • Understand the fundamental technical operations of image processing and machine vision: the pixel encoding of images, Gaussian and convolutional filters,
  • Explore critical aspects of machine vision in a technically-informed way: e.g. the problems in algorithmic bias brought about by featureless convolutional networks
  • Develop and run their own simple machine vision and image processing pipelines, in a visual programming language compiling to Python
  • Understand the potential synergies and limitations of machine vision applications in humanities research and cultural heritage institutions
