Have you heard about High Performance Computing, but are not sure what it is or whether it is relevant for your work? Would you like to use a HPC, but are not sure where to start? Are you using your personal computer to run computationally demanding tasks, which take long and slow down your work? Do you need to use software that runs on Linux, but don't have access to a Linux computer? If any of these questions apply to you, then this course might be for you!

Knowing how to work on a High Performance Computing system is an essential skill for applications such as bioinformatics, big-data analysis, image processing, machine learning, parallelising tasks, and other high-throughput applications.

In this course we will cover the basics of High Performance Computing, what it is and how you can use it in practice. This is a hands-on workshop, which should be accessible to researchers from a range of backgrounds and offering several opportunities to practice the skills we learn along the way.

As an optional session for those interested, we will also introduce the (free) HPC facilities available at Cambridge University (the course is not otherwise Cambridge-specific).

The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level.

This session focuses on the practical measures, knowledge and skills needed by HR professionals, Institutional administrators and others with professional responsibility for others, to create and support a culture which is courteous and professional; where we can appropriately tackle inappropriate behaviour and where there is confidence in the systems to carry that out.

It provides techniques to support colleagues, managers and Heads of Institution to build confidence to address inappropriate behaviour and other difficult situations at the earliest stage possible maximising the potential for early and sustained resolution of any potential conflict.

The session will have interactive elements, including considering a case study and potential options for resolving with the best possible outcomes for all.

In this virtual session, we are pleased to welcome Claire Michel. Claire manages several projects relating to undergraduate education. These include a Reimagining Professional Services local project for all professional staff members supporting undergraduate education in the School of the Biological Sciences. The aim is to share good practices, improve processes, and increase consistency across departments. The talk will give you an overview of the project and a chance to see how RPS can be applied locally.

As always, there will be an open discussion and opportunity to discuss the Continuous Improvement initiatives that delegates are involved in and seek advice from colleagues across the group.

ST18 - Design & Analysis of Experiments by ML new (2 of 2) Finished 13:00 - 17:00 Wolfson Lecture Theatre

This complimentary hands-on workshop is offered to PhD students and researchers at University of Cambridge who want to learn more about design of experiments (DOE) and data analysis. DOE skills are highly demanded by industry and still under-represented in many university curricula. Design of experiments is a practical and ubiquitous approach for exploring multifactor opportunity spaces, and JMP offers world-class capabilities for design and analysis in a form you can easily use without any programming. To properly uncover how inputs (factors) jointly affect the outputs (responses), DOE is the most efficient and effective way – and the only predictable way – of learning. Unlike the analysis of existing data, designed experiments can tell you about cause and effect, drive innovation and test opportunities by exploring new factor spaces. In addition to classical DOE designs, JMP also offers an innovative custom design capability that tailors your design to answer specific questions without wasting precious resources. Once the data has been collected, JMP streamlines the analysis and model building so you can easily see the pattern of response, identify active factors and optimize responses.

In this course you will learn to understand why to consider DOE analyze experiments with a single categorical factor using analysis of variance (ANOVA) analyze experiments with a single continuous factor using regression analysis understand the difference between classical and optimal designs design, analyze and interpret screening experiments incl. Definitive Screening Design design, analyze and interpret experiments in response surface methodology augment designs for sequential experimentation apply robust optimization evaluate and compare designs understand advanced features like blocking, split-plot experiments and covariates

The format of this course will be a mix of concept presentations, live demos and hands-on exercises. Most examples are inspired by chemistry and biotech, but can be easily transferred to other fields like materials science, agri-food science or engineering. Attendees should have access to JMP Pro (pre-installed). JMP Pro 17 is available for all attendees from University of Cambridge for both Windows and Mac. No prior knowledge required. All content and demos will be shared with the participants.

A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

Leadership Essentials is a key programme suitable for those with responsibilities for others’ work, behaviour and development, which aims to help managers refresh and build their skills and experience in this area. As well as clarifying key responsibilities, it focuses on critical areas that some can find more difficult, such as giving and receiving feedback effectively and handling challenging conversations. The programme incorporates tutor input; opportunities for discussion, reflection and sharing of good practice with others with similar responsibilities. It also includes curated e-learning resources to support managers with their ongoing learning and development.

Participants are required to attend both half day sessions.

This course is designed for students and staff of the Judge Business School at Cambridge University, who have prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and wish to learn how to better communicate with native Chinese speakers in business settings.

For the language elements, the course is focused on key business communications in four areas: Present yourself and your business; establish business relations; business work and travel; and promote your business.

Another element of the course is to equip students to communicate effectively in the Chinese business context, through gaining a good understanding of Chinese company culture through industry case studies.

Forming the Leadership and Management Community of Practice new Finished 12:00 - 13:00 HRTP MS Teams 01

The rapid (and exciting) growth of the Leaders and Managers Network (well over 700 self-subscribed members on the mailing list) highlights the need for increased capacity to support you and others in this most critical, influential, stimulating, rewarding and ‘not without its challenges’ role. There are over 2500 'formal' line managers across all staff groups, plus many more who informally support the work, behaviour and development of others.

Currently, members of the network can access:

  • A regular post of news, articles, resources and development opportunities in this area
  • A monthly drop-in meeting to meet with others who also have people-related responsibilities as part of their role
  • Occasional events aimed at LMN members, such as An Introduction to the HR Transformation Programme, Meet the Investigations Team and Supporting Disability Inclusion.

We are looking to ADD to this existing offering by expanding to create a Leadership and Management Community of Practice. For those who want it, I hope that this will bring more opportunities to interact with each other (in real time and asynchronously via Teams and area-specific Channels) and the chance to share all the excellent practice, ideas, experience, skills and knowledge that we have in the network.

Medicine: Introduction to Literature Searching (for University) new Finished 14:00 - 16:00 Clinical School, Medical Library, Library Training Room

A course specifically for University of Cambridge staff and students. Attendees will learn how to search medical/healthcare databases accessed with a Raven login (such as Medline and Embase) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. This course is delivered at an introductory/refresher level, and assumes you have had no prior training in how to search databases.

All attendees are required to have a Raven login. NHS staff wanting to learn similar material should book onto our 'Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching' course instead.

This award winning course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R software environment. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the course focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the biological sciences.

There are three core goals for this course:

  1. Use R confidently for statistics and data analysis
  2. Be able to analyse datasets using standard statistical techniques
  3. Know which tests are and are not appropriate

R is an open source programming language so all of the software we will use in the course is free.

In this course, we explore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypothesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The focus of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and developing robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying statistical theory.

After the course you should feel confident to be able to select and implement common statistical techniques using R and moreover know when, and when not, to apply these techniques.

Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts.

Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below.

What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above.

This session provides an introduction for both mentors and mentees. We will discuss the benefits of mentoring and provide guidance on how to set objectives for the mentoring relationship and how to prepare for your first session together. During change we often focus on what will be delivered and if it will be right for the job, but we often focus less on the need to support, reassure, and motivate those impacted by change – the people side of change.

This short session for staff with people-management responsibilities (including PIs, supervisors and team leads) will explore approaches to the people side of change in the context of the University. Whilst high-level sponsorship provides senior leadership and the rationale for change, research shows that direct line managers have the most influence on how their team respond to change by helping to support people in understanding, preparing for, and adopting changes in working life and practice. “Change happens one person at a time.” Prosci.com.

Using the HR Transformation Programme and the introduction of myHR as an example, we will look at how the approaches we are using to support colleagues across the University can be applied to the changes you may be leading in your team or area.
