Introduction to working with UNIX and bash (IN-PERSON) [Full] 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - The Pembroke Teaching Rooms

The Unix shell (command line) is a powerful and essential tool for modern researchers, in particular those working in computational disciplines such as bioinformatics and large-scale data analysis. In this course we will explore the basic structure of the Unix operating system and how we can interact with it using a basic set of commands. You will learn how to navigate the filesystem, manipulate text-based data and combine multiple commands to quickly extract information from large data files. You will also learn how to write scripts, use programmatic techniques to automate task repetition.

Introductory course to German. This course is for those with no previous knowledge of German. Communicative context, with videos, audio, texts and conversation.

This session discusses the benefits and challenges of maintaining an online presence as a researcher. Part of two sessions on this topic, this first session looks at setting up your academic persona and using academic platforms. Starting with exploring what comes up through a quick Google search all the way through to maintaining profiles on academic sites, we will look at the pros and cons of online engagement. This will include tools such as ORCID, and networking sites such as academia.edu and ResearchGate.

Participants should expect to have the opportunity to critically evaluate the various options presented in this session with the overall aim of being better informed when deciding where to invest their time and efforts when building an academic presence online.

Medicine: Getting the best results - improving your database searching (for NHS staff only) new [Places] 11:00 - 13:00 Clinical School, Medical Library, Library Training Room

A course specifically for NHS staff. Attendees will learn how to search databases accessed with an Athens login (such as Medline, Embase and Cinahl) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography.

All attendees are required to have an NHS Athens login. University of Cambridge staff and students wanting to learn similar material should book onto the Introduction to Literature Searching (for University) course instead.

Please note that this session takes place in person, in the Medical Library training room.

JTC: Advanced German Conversation Hours charged (6 of 6) In progress 13:00 - 14:00 Language Centre, Teaching Room 4

This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2/C1 level upwards) a chance to practice speaking German with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web links, video etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for low-pressure, informal practice. This is also a great follow-up activity for CULP German learners and can be repeated year after year.

Previous participants from German Advanced CULP are warmly invited to attend the German Conversation Hour.

Medicine: Writing a Systematic Review Protocol (for University and NHS) new [Places] 14:00 - 15:30 Cambridge University Libraries Online

Publishing a protocol -- stating in advance the search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, data analysis and other evaluative techniques -- is a core requirement for conducting a systematic review. The process of writing this protocol will also mean you have written in advance a large chunk of what will need to go into the finished systematic review, saving you a huge amount of time.

This session will cover the contents and types of information you will need to provide in your protocol, and will give attendees the opportunity to write a draft protocol, as well as highlighting helpful resources and further support.

A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Continuous Improvement team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

This is a classroom version of the Cognos Introduction held at Greenwich House - All delegates will need to bring a laptop (docking stations, monitors, external keyboard and mice will be available in the room)

Please note - there is no parking available at Greenwich House. The Madingley Park and Ride is a 15 minute walk and the Universal Bus stops on Madingley Road.

Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts.

Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below.

What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above.

Introduction to Metabolomics (IN-PERSON) (1 of 2) [Places] 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

The goal of metabolomics is to identify and quantify the complete biochemical composition of a biological sample. With the increase in genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic information there is a growing need to understand the metabolic phenotype that these genes and proteins ultimately control.

The aim of this course is to provide an introductory overview of metabolomics and its applications in life sciences and environmental settings. We will introduce different techniques used to extract metabolites and analyse samples to collect metabolomic data (such as HPLC or GC-based MS and NMR), present how to analyse such data, how to identify metabolites using online databases and how to map the metabolomic data to metabolic pathways.

Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique.

These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment.

This workshop introduces you to the basics of everyday communication in the BSL. You will learn to initiate a basic conversation, for example, how to greet and introduce yourself to others while using the BSL syntax and asking the questions.

The BSL is about listening to what cannot be heard. It is about experiencing what it is like being a deaf person. It is also about how to better use our body language and our emotions when conveying our messages across. All these skills are essential in our everyday communication and this workshop provides a friendly environment to experience them.

The prerequisite for joining is a basic knowledge of the BSL alphabet and fingerspelling, which you obtained in the earlier workshop.

This course is designed for students and staff of the Judge Business School at Cambridge University, who have prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and wish to learn how to better communicate with native Chinese speakers in business settings.

For the language elements, the course is focused on key business communications in four areas: Present yourself and your business; establish business relations; business work and travel; and promote your business.

Another element of the course is to equip students to communicate effectively in the Chinese business context, through gaining a good understanding of Chinese company culture through industry case studies.

The onboarding passport supports our new starters in developing their knowledge about their role, their team, CUDAR and the University. It has been designed to help them feel connected to other parts of CUDAR and understand how we fit within the Cambridge ecosystem.

It includes new and improved activities to create excitement and deepen their engagement. Much of the content is deigned to be self led so that the new starter can pace the content without becoming overwhelmed but there is a significant role that line managers will need to play in terms of keeping them on track, asking questions and prompting conversations that will solidify what they are learning along the way.

To support line managers we have also created a corresponding Line Manager Guide to ensure that you are clear on your responsibilities in the journey.

This briefing session will take a closer look through the passport and corresponding LM guide, in particular highlighting the key moments that line managers will engage with the journey.
