At intermediate 2 level the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course.

Drop In Session - Continuous Improvement [Places] 09:00 - 10:00 CPMO: MS Teams

A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Continuous Improvement team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

Linear mixed effects models (IN-PERSON) new (3 of 3) In progress 09:30 - 13:00 Bioinformatics Training Facility - The Pembroke Teaching Rooms

This course gives an introduction to linear mixed effects models, also called multi-level models or hierarchical models, for the purposes of using them in your own research or studies.

We emphasise the practical skills and key concepts needed to work with these models, using applied examples and real datasets.

After completing the course, you should have:

  • A conceptual understanding of what mixed effects models are, and when they should be used
  • Familiarity with fitting and interpreting mixed effects models using the lme4 package in R

Please note that this course builds on knowledge of linear modelling, therefore should not be considered a general introduction to statistical modelling.

Introduction to Phylogenetics (IN-PERSON) [Places] 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

This course will teach you how to use molecular data to construct and interpret phylogenies. We will start by introducing basic concepts in phylogenetic analysis, what trees represent and how to interpret them. We will then cover how to produce a multiple sequence alignment from DNA and protein sequences, and the pros and cons of different alignment algorithms. You will then learn about different methods of phylogenetic inference, with a particular focus on maximum likelihood and how to assess confidence in your tree using bootstrap resampling. Finally, we will introduce how Bayesian methods can help to estimate the uncertainty in the inferred tree parameters as well as incorporate information for more advanced/bespoke phylogenetic analysis.

Virtual Writing Retreats [Places] 10:00 - 12:00 Online

Do you have a deadline coming up or a piece of writing that’s long overdue? Or maybe some data analysis that keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list?

Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique.

These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment.

The retreats will take place several times per month throughout the academic year and you can attend as many as you like (within booking limits for each session).

CULP: German Intermediate for Academic Purposes (LAP) (5 of 8) In progress 13:30 - 15:00 Faculty of Classics, Room 2.04

This class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts:

The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc.

The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate.

This course will cover the quantitative background to underpin many of the electrochemical methods exploited by the research groups in the Department.

  • The first part ('Foundations') will cover the background physical chemistry relevant for electrochemical systems: Following a reminder of the basics of electrochemistry, we address the physical chemistry of metals, ionic solutions and the electrode/solution interface, including electrode dynamics, and connection to experimental measurements.
  • The second part ('Applications') will cover specific examples of applications drawn from active research groups in the department.

This course is designed for students and staff of the Judge Business School at Cambridge University, who have prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and wish to learn how to better communicate with native Chinese speakers in business settings.

For the language elements, the course is focused on key business communications in four areas: Present yourself and your business; establish business relations; business work and travel; and promote your business.

Another element of the course is to equip students to communicate effectively in the Chinese business context, through gaining a good understanding of Chinese company culture through industry case studies.

JTC: Intermediate Japanese Conversation Hours new (4 of 6) In progress 17:00 - 18:00 Language Centre, Teaching Room 2

Friendly and informal conversation practice sessions for those working towards a B2 level or for those who have completed an Elementary level Japanese CULP course. Learners will take turns to choose a topic for the session and prepare some discussion questions. Whether you are learning from a resource or a class, you could use it as a chance to practice talking about a topic you have learned or alternatively, you could take it as an opportunity to branch out and experiment with discussing a new idea or issue that interests you.

A native speaker facilitator is there to provide support in sustaining conversation and to give you feedback on your language.
