Scientific Writing

This 2 half-day course focuses on the structure of good scientific writing using writing exercises as an integral part of the workshop. The course will look at the practical process of writing, the nature of scientific publishing, and the importance of editing. The day will include editing sessions in which you apply the ideas you have learnt to your own writing. For this, you will need to write a 300-word abstract about your work in advance and have it available to work on during the workshop. This course will enable the participants to practice existing spreadsheet skills and develop more advanced skills within the context of UFS data. There will be the opportunity to extract data from the system and learn to manipulate, analyse and use it for reporting purposes. The course runs over two sessions and participants will need to attend both of these sessions. |

This course looks at the tasks required at month end to manage your grants and at transactions that need to be completed using a variety of tools in CUFS. It also looks at preparing grants for closing. |

The course aims to promote an understanding of mental health and ill health in a workplace setting and equip managers with increased awareness and confidence to recognise and manage signs of stress and mental health ill health. We cover risk and protective factors, stress, signs and symptoms of common mental health problems and psychosis. Peer-reviewed publications allow researchers to communicate their research to the broader research community, and thus, contribute to the body of work within their field. You may only feel lonely at certain times or experience a deep feeling of loneliness that goes on for a long time. You might have a lot of social contact and still feel lonely, especially if you don't feel understood or cared for by the people around you. Communication with others might be online and through social media and an illusion of connection could mask the loneliness we feel. You are welcome to join our hour-long webinar, to explore aspects and understanding of loneliness and share suggestions and ideas that could help in addressing and managing the times when we feel lonely. The onboarding passport supports our new starters in developing their knowledge about their role, their team, CUDAR and the University. It has been designed to help them feel connected to other parts of CUDAR and understand how we fit within the Cambridge ecosystem. It includes new and improved activities to create excitement and deepen their engagement. Much of the content is deigned to be self led so that the new starter can pace the content without becoming overwhelmed but there is a significant role that line managers will need to play in terms of keeping them on track, asking questions and prompting conversations that will solidify what they are learning along the way. To support line managers we have also created a corresponding Line Manager Guide to ensure that you are clear on your responsibilities in the journey. This briefing session will take a closer look through the passport and corresponding LM guide, in particular highlighting the key moments that line managers will engage with the journey. |

This session discusses the benefits and challenges of maintaining an online presence as a researcher. Part of two sessions on this topic, this second session looks at using social media as a researcher. We will look at the practicalities and pros and cons of online engagement through tools such as Twitter/X, Mastodon, YouTube and LinkedIn. Participants should expect to have the opportunity to critically evaluate the various options presented in this session with the overall aim of being better informed when deciding where to invest their time and efforts when building an academic presence online. |

These Portuguese reading courses are designed for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Latin American, Brazilian, Portuguese or Lusophone language, culture and heritage. They offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce critical readings and interpretations. The classes are going to be conducted primarily in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for oral and listening practice. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Portuguese. The Basic course does not require any knowledge of the language while the prerequisite for the Intermediate course is a CEFR A2 level. The courses offer the possibility of progression and Basic students are strongly encouraged to continue with the Intermediate course. Please note that these courses are attended by a number of very able, Spanish speaking students of Latin American studies and that the class dynamics are likely to be fast paced. For the rest of the students this might be challenging but also very rewarding and conducive to sound progress. The courses will start from a Basic level and will aim at:
