Data Science in Python

This course covers concepts and strategies for working more effectively with Python with the aim of writing reusable code, using function and libraries. Participants will acquire a working knowledge of key concepts which are prerequisites for advanced programming in Python e.g. writing modules and classes. Note: this course is the continuation of the Introduction to Solving Biological Problems with Python; participants are expected to have attended the introductory Python course and/or have acquired some working knowledge of Python. This course is also open to Python beginners who are already fluent in other programming languages as this will help them to quickly get started in Python. The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level. This course builds on the knowledge gained in AP Part 1. The delegates will learn how to match invoices to purchase orders, add in freight charges and process invoices from other departments. Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research. The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion. Participants will learn that publishing is a game and the more they understand the rules of the game the higher their chances of becoming publishing authors. They will learn that writing an academic article and getting it published may help with their careers but it does not make them better researchers, or cleverer than they were before their paper was accepted; it simply means they have played the game well. Suitable for researchers in any discipline who are keen to learn how to write academic papers and articles efficiently and/or who have had papers rejected and are not really sure why. We are running a focus group to try out Gale Digital Scholar Lab, an online platform of Digital Humanities tools for organising and analysing the historical texts in their archive. Gale representatives will demo the capabilities of the Lab and give you a practical opportunity to build your own corpus and do some analysis and visualisation (without writing a line of code). You will have a chance to feedback your opinions and research needs, and discuss broader issues of how these sorts of tools might fit in with your Digital Humanities research, and the role of private sector providers in the provision of tools and resources to researchers. Gale Digital Scholar Lab will be available to participants in advance of the focus group. A link will be sent to participants by email. Refreshments and light lunch will be provided. And yet, the multitude and variety of funders and types of funding, and the disparate information relating to funding, has made the process of applying a daunting and complex one. Where do you being? What are you eligible for? How do you manage your efforts? How do you even write a research proposal appropriate to the funder’s needs? All these questions and more are covered in this course. Whilst not offering specific or bespoke information, the course will nevertheless provide participants with a general overview of the types of funding and funders out there, and the process of applying and writing a research proposal. |

Kinase drug discovery remains to be an area of significant and growing interest across academia and in the pharmaceutical industry - there are approximately 30 FDA approved small molecule inhibitors which target kinases, half of which were approved in the last 3 years. This lecture will give an insight into the medicinal chemistry story behind one clinical candidate and 2 marketed drugs. Crystal structures will be used to explain general principles behind designing for kinase inhibition, and some more advanced topics will be covered such as prodrugs, covalent inhibition and consideration of mutation status in drug discovery |

There are two sessions - attendance at both it not compulsory. Both will be run by Dr Sam Lucy (Director of College Admissions).
This session will aim to explain the University’s admissions process and provide advice on how to communicate this to prospective applicants. These sessions are aimed at any academics and staff members wishing to increase their knowledge of the application process, and will be particularly useful to those who may communicate with prospective students at University Open Days or similar events. Please note that this session is aimed at those who are new to the University, or have little previous experience of the undergraduate admissions process in Cambridge.

This short session will provide an understanding of the principles, tools and techniques involved in Process Analysis with a view to improving business process effectiveness and efficiency. Delegates will have the opportunity to practice using the techniques that they learn via exercises designed to be enjoyable and thought provoking. The course refers to the methodology used in conjunction with Triaster process mapping software available to users across the University of Cambridge. |

Before undertaking any piece of primary research it’s important to be aware of as much of the existing literature as possible. A systematic literature review can also be a research end in itself. And it’s not something to be taken lightly. But how can you be sure you’re being as rigorous as necessary? How can you manage the references you find, document the process, and also know when to stop searching? This session assumes attendees have already had prior introductory training in literature searching. It is a prerequisite that you have attended either Introduction to Literature Searching (if you are a University of Cambridge staff member or student) or Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching (if you are an NHS staff member). Exceptions will be made if you received similar training from another department or university - please contact us if you have any questions about prerequisites. |

At an advanced level, the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course. One of the aims of the advanced level courses is also presentation skills as the courses aim to cater to the academic needs (i.e. research, conferences) of the students.
