This meeting is convened annually to enable directors of teaching and senior tutors to share ideas, expertise and good practice, and to hear about and inform some of the collegiate University's larger conversations about undergraduate education.

This year’s annual meeting, hosted by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, Professor Bhaskar Vira, continues our focus on addressing inequities in students’ experiences and outcomes through inclusive educational practices. As work gets underway to develop the next Access & Participation Plan (APP) 2024-28, this is a timely opportunity to reflect on what we have learnt and on the progress made during the period of the current APP and on the Collegiate University’s priorities for the next five years.

Colleagues from the Department of Engineering will speak about research with students aimed at developing a contextualised understanding of the factors giving rise to gender awarding gaps. The research will also consider how this understanding will inform improvements to curriculum design, teaching and assessment as part of the Engineering Tripos reform to Part I. There will be time for discussion and to identify ways in which colleagues may be supported in enhancing inclusive educational practices in their own contexts.

This interactive course is complementary to other courses within the Continuous Improvement theme and is designed to give delegates the knowledge and tools to;

  • plan and deliver process improvement workshops
  • coach and support others to improve processes

This week-long course is aimed at people with little or no experience using statistical analyses in research. It introduces participants to core concepts in statistics and experimental design, aimed at ensuring that the resulting data is able to address the research question using appropriate statistical methods.

The interactive course gives participants a hands-on, applied foundation in statistical data analysis and experimental design. Group exercises and discussions are combined with short lectures that introduce key theoretical concepts. Computational methods are used throughout the course, using the R programming language. Formative assessment exercises allow participants to test their understanding throughout the course and encourage questions and critical thinking.

By the end of the course participants will be able to critically evaluate and design effective research questions, linking experimental design concepts to subsequent statistical analyses. It will allow participants to make informed decisions on which statistical tests are most appropriate to their research questions. The course will provide a solid grounding for further development of applied statistical competencies.

A community of practice (CoP) is a group of people who share a common passion, set of problems, or interest in a topic and who come together to fulfil both individual and group goals in order to:

  • Create support networks
  • Learn and grow their skills
  • Share knowledge and join up related work
  • Share common approaches
  • Collaborate and innovate, and create better practices for everyone.

Come along to this session if you would like to find out more, or be involved in the exciting development of a potential new EA/PA CoP. A lot of interest has been expressed about forming a CoP in this area - there will be the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and learn more about how this could grow into a successfully functioning CoP.

An Introduction to Undergraduate Supervision (Essay-Based Subjects) Finished 14:00 - 17:00 Student Services Centre, New Wing Seminar Room


This practical programme is only for those who are scheduled to begin supervising in the next few months; it is not for those who - at this point - have a general interest in learning more about supervisions but have not arranged to start supervising.

This workshop is the second component of a three-part programme, which is designed to be completed in the following order:

1. A self-paced online module containing information on the Cambridge supervision system and introducing the principles and practices of effective teaching and learning, which must be completed before attending this workshop.
2. This in-person workshop that incorporates personal reflection on teaching practice, design of learning activities, discussion of real teaching scenarios, a chance to discuss and ask questions and access to practical information about organising and carrying out your supervisions.
3. An optional follow-up session for those who wish to explore further after gaining some supervision experience.

Please note that everyone new to supervising undergraduates at Cambridge must complete this course: both the online module and the workshop (or equivalent face-to-face training provided by your Department or Faculty).

Bookings for all workshops will close two days before the workshop to give you time to complete the online module ahead of the workshop.

An Introduction to Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessment Finished 09:30 - 11:00 Greenwich House, Minsk Room

This training is intended for staff and post graduate students who regularly use DSE to help prevent or reduce the risk of possible health problems arising from computer use. The training is also aimed at those responsible within departments for assisting with the DSE risk assessment process. The course will provide an understanding of the DSE Regulations 1992 (as amended 2002) and discuss employer's and employee's duties regarding the assessment of DSE workstations. There will be theory and a practical demonstration. The training will allow time to discuss some of the common health problems and concerns that may be associated with poor workstation set-up with examples of possible solutions.

This session provides an introduction for both mentors and mentees. We will discuss the benefits of mentoring and provide guidance on how to set objectives for the mentoring relationship and how to prepare for your first session together. We will also offer some tips about how to be a good mentee and mentor.

A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

Virtual Writing Retreats Finished 10:00 - 12:00 Online

Do you have a deadline coming up or a piece of writing that’s long overdue? Or maybe some data analysis that keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list?

Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique.

These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment.

The retreats will take place several times per month throughout the academic year and you can attend as many as you like (within booking limits for each session).

Fair attribution and publishing for technicians (in-person) new Finished 11:00 - 12:00 Department of Plant Sciences, Tom ap Rees Room

Fair attribution for technicians through either co-authorship or direct acknowledgement in research publications is a key component of the ‘visibility’ and ‘recognition’ areas of the Technician Commitment, of which the University of Cambridge was a founding signatory in 2017.

However, there is currently no policy or standard practice for acknowledging the role of technicians, equipment and facilities in the University or the wider sector. Technicians experience a great disparity in their recognition and visibility in scholarly outputs.

This interactive workshop, organised by the Biological Sciences Libraries, will introduce you to the scholarly communications process as well as tools such as CRediT and ORCID, and facilitate conversation amongst peers.

Physics Health & Safety - PoM Access Briefing for Non-research Work new Finished 16:00 - 16:30 Department of Physics

A short (10 minute) briefing covering the biological and other hazards to watch out for when walking through the PoM or carrying out independent non-experimental work, such as maintenance, cleaning, repairs to equipment, giving first aid, taking items through to Maxwell and vice versa, OR accompanying others who need authorised access (e.g. contractors).

If you will be located at the PoM or doing experimental work, you should attend the full PoM Induction instead (see "Related Courses").
