Linear mixed effects models (IN-PERSON) (1 of 2) [Places] 09:30 - 17:00 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

This course gives an introduction to linear mixed effects models, also called multi-level models or hierarchical models, for the purposes of using them in your own research or studies.

We emphasise the practical skills and key concepts needed to work with these models, using applied examples and real datasets.

After completing the course, you should have:

  • A conceptual understanding of what mixed effects models are, and when they should be used
  • Familiarity with fitting and interpreting mixed effects models using the lme4 package in R

Please note that this course builds on knowledge of linear modelling, therefore should not be considered a general introduction to statistical modelling.

Fire Safety Awareness training provided by the NHS for all embedded tenants. It is recommended that this training be refreshed every 2-3 years.

The Squiggly Careers - Podcast Group new [Places] 12:00 - 13:00 CPMO: MS Teams

You've heard of a book group, but how about one for podcasts? In these sessions we will focus on a different episode from the wonderful Squiggly Careers Amazing If podcasts, which includes over 300 episodes on career based topics ranging from coaching and confidence, to strength and values. Before each session you will be sent a link to a podcast episode to listen to and reflect upon. During the session you will be led through a selection of tasks/exercises recommended in the episode Pod Sheet. You will have the opportunity to work on these individually and then reflect back as a group.

Session 10: How to have a high trust team

In this episode the podcast hosts talk about how trust in teams makes a big difference to work and wellbeing. They explore practical ways trust shows up and ideas for action to create environments where people feel respected and able to be themselves. They discuss the importance of assessing the practical and emotional aspects of trust, how to make ‘mistake moments’ part of your team’s ways of working, and the role of ‘red table talks’ in addressing tough topics. This session may be of particular interest to those who are attending the live session from Sarah Ellis on 25 June (University of Cambridge training - High Trust Teams (from Squiggly Careers) - Tue 25 Jun 2024) and would like to explore some of the material covered in more depth.

Mental Health Awareness: Senior Leadership Programme new [Places] 14:00 - 17:00 Selwyn College, Quarry Whitehouse Auditorium

This 3-hour session is a bespoke programme for staff in senior leadership roles at the University and Colleges on the topic of mental health and wellbeing in their workplace and the educational context.

The session offers:

  • An opportunity for senior leaders to support a whole institution approach to mental health and wellbeing, promoting an informed and compassionate higher education community which is conducive to wellbeing and supports the full academic, occupational, and social potential of all staff and students.
  • A brief overview of staff and student mental health in Higher Education.
  • Best practice guidance on identifying and responding to staff and students who may be experiencing mental health difficulties.
  • Context-specific case vignettes and scenarios to improve staff confidence in intervening and applying skills in discussions with staff and students, including those who may be experiencing poor wellbeing, mental ill-health and thoughts of suicide.
  • Evidence-based and practical strategies for promoting wellbeing throughout the higher education community, including self-care for staff.
  • Key resources and services in place to support mental health locally and nationally.

Please note these are stand-alone training sessions and participants should only attend one session.


This training is provided free of charge to College and University staff thanks to a philanthropic donation. The cost of providing the course is £25 per participant.

A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Continuous Improvement team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

This training session, delivered by Key Travel, is open to new and experienced colleagues who are responsible for booking group travel (10 passengers or more) on behalf of the University. Key Travel’s Specialist Travel team will take you through the process of group bookings including:

Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts.

Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below.

What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above.

Extracting biological information from gene lists (IN-PERSON) [Full] 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

Many experimental designs end up producing lists of hits, usually based around genes or transcripts. Sometimes these lists are small enough that they can be examined individually, but often it is useful to do a more structured functional analysis to try to automatically determine any interesting biological themes which turn up in the lists.

This course looks at the various software packages, databases and statistical methods which may be of use in performing such an analysis. As well as being a practical guide to performing these types of analysis the course will also look at the types of artefacts and bias which can lead to false conclusions about functionality and will look at the appropriate ways to both run the analysis and present the results for publication.
