There will be the opportunity to extract data from the system and learn to manipulate, analyse and use it for reporting purposes. Virtual Writing Retreats

Do you have a deadline coming up or a piece of writing that’s long overdue? Or maybe some data analysis that keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list? Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique. These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment. The retreats will take place several times per month throughout the academic year and you can attend as many as you like (within booking limits for each session). Neurodiversity is a revolutionary concept for the field of psychiatry in implying that there is no such thing as a ‘normal’ brain – rather, brains and minds differ. Autism is just one example of neurodiversity. Difference does not mean one type of brain is better or worse than another: they rare simply different, and differences should be celebrated, accepted, and respected. Society has a duty to ensure inclusion, so that people who are different enjoy equal human rights and dignity. Whilst some differences in autistic people cause challenges, such as in communication and social relationships, and are disabilities, other differences are strengths or even talents (such as excellent attention to or memory for detail). The ‘neurodiversity’ framework requires society re-think the design of our schools, work places and public services to make space for different learning and processing styles, so that individuals, including autistic individuals, flourish and fulfil their potential. Join us for an interesting talk by Professor Sir Simon Baron-Cohen from the Department of Psychiatry, School of Clinical Medicine. This talk will be recorded. This class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts: The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc. The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate. R is one of the leading programming languages in Data Science. It is widely used to perform statistics, machine learning, visualisations and data analyses. It is an open source programming language so all the software we will use in the course is free. This course is an introduction to R designed for participants with no programming experience. We will start from scratch by introducing how to start programming in R and progress our way and learn how to read and write to files, manipulate data and visualise it by creating different plots - all the fundamental tasks you need to get you started analysing your data. During the course we will be working with one of the most popular packages in R; tidyverse that will allow you to manipulate your data effectively and visualise it to a publication level standard.
