The Programme offers general language tuition. At a basic level, the focus is on the alphabet, letters, merging the letters, and suffixes. It also includes basic reading and writing activities. Each course features a functional-notional syllabus and grammar points are analysed in context.
This course will not be formally assessed and students who attend regularly (12/15 sessions) will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Faculty of History students only
Some background reading in modern Turkish and knowing modern Turkish grammar is required.
The Course introduces students to the following functions and notions:
- What is Ottoman Turkish? Historical development of Ottoman Turkish
- Ottoman Turkish Alphabet (letters)
- Ottoman Turkish Alphabet (hareke: elif, he, vav, ye), numbers and punctuation
- Ottoman Turkish Alphabet (letters read with different vowels)
- Kef letter and consonants in Ottoman Turkish
- Suffixes in Ottoman Turkish: Possessive suffixes
- Suffixes in Ottoman Turkish: Accusative
- Suffixes in Ottoman Turkish: Dative
- Reading Printed Ottoman Turkish: Word activities
- Reading Arabic and Persian-origin Turkish words
- Reading Printed Ottoman Turkish: Text activities
- Writing in Ottoman Turkish: Printed letters, words
- Writing in Ottoman Turkish: Printed texts
