We have set up an alumni group specifically for these AAT qualified/part qualified staff as a way to maintain the connection and to support their continued development

Cyber security

Protecting the University’s assets, intellectual property and information against cyber security threats is a complex, evolving task. Cyber attacks can result in data loss, reputational damage, fines and other types of financial loss. To help protect the University against these risks, University Information Services (UIS) is overseeing a major programme to improve cyber security levels across the University

Kieren Lovell from UIS will be coming to speak about how we manage our security in the University and what steps we can take to protect ourselves.

The AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping is the starting point for studying the AAT qualfiication.

It is a short qualification which will help you to develop essential bookkeeping skills. Once completed, you will have an understanding of basic accounting practices and techniques including double-entry bookkeeping. It can be treated as a stand alone qualifcation or used as a stepping stone to further AAT study at Level 3.

This is an the fourth of four online AbilityNet sessions looking at digital accessibility, specifically how to understand the results of accessibility evaluations and testing results.

The new Web Accessibility regulations require Universities to conduct audits and testing across all their digital estates, form websites to learning environments. These tests can be carried out by external contractors or your own in-house teams (see Workshop 3 for how to do this yourself)

Although built around common standards such as WCAG2.1, many people find accessibility test results and audit reports difficult to understand. Automatically generated reports or expert audits can produce a list of issues that need prioritising. Organisations must also decide how these accessibility barriers are communicated through their accessibility statement and how they can remediate them in the future.

This session is aimed at anyone creating, managing or procuring digital content or systems. It will also be of value as an introductory session for developers and eLearning content creators looking to develop accessibility skills. While not compulsory, it is strongly recommended that attendees attend the session “Introduction to accessibility testing” if they have no prior knowledge of accessibility tests.

Tom Levinson, Head of Widening Participation and Regional Collaboration, will discuss the new Access and Participation Plan agreed between the University of Cambridge and the government regulator, the Office for Students. Achieving Clarity in Academic Writing new Thu 6 Feb 2020   13:30 Finished

Achieving clarity in writing is not just about what’s written on the page – that is merely the final stage in a long and complex process. It actually starts with the interpretation of the question… From a linguistic perspective writing is actually rather straightforward, but the clarity of the ‘end product’, particularly in academic writing, is very much dependent on the clarity of all the stages that precede it. This session will examine this process and explores strategies to help you improve the clarity of your writing.

This course will provide a detailed critique of the methods and philosophy of the Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) approach to statistics which is currently dominant in social and biomedical science. We will briefly contrast NHST with alternatives, especially with Bayesian methods. We will use some computer code (Matlab and R) to demonstrate some issues. However, we will focus on the big picture rather on the implementation of specific procedures.

This development programme for generalist and specialist administrators draws on the expertise of senior figures in the University and provides up to date information on the various strands and issues of University strategy and governance. It includes development of some key skills and a project activity, and offers a valuable opportunity to network with administrators from the UAS and other departments and institutions.

Selection for this programme is via nomination by School Secretaries, Heads of Division or Heads of Non-School Institutions during the summer. Nominees will need to demonstrate the benefit of participating, both for themselves and their institution. Please speak to your line manager and/or appropriate nominator if you would like to be considered.

This workshop offers students the chance to give a short presentation, with or without PowerPoint. Its aim is to hone the skills required to give an effective academic presentation, and to receive feedback in a supportive and friendly environment. A maximum 7 students only to present. Participating students must bring a pre-prepared, short (10 mins. maximum) presentation with them on a USB stick. Interactive whiteboard available for use; no laptops required. It is recommended that you also bring a printout of your presentation (6 slides per page) for feedback.

Please note in the special requirements if you do NOT wish to present.

In this workshop we will look principally at the components of ‘fast speech’. These include use of weak forms, linking, stress time etc. The aim of the session is both to recognise those aspects of pronunciation which aid listening and to get plenty of practice. Students who have come to previous sessions on pronunciation with me are advised that some material will be repeated.

Presenting is a crucial skill for researchers, yet it is often something that even experienced scholars struggle with. This interactive workshop is designed for people who already have some experience of presenting and the basic principles involved, but would like to develop their skills in this area to a higher level.

This workshop provides the opportunity for practical experience of presenting within a supportive environment. During the workshop, you will be given time to design and deliver a short (5-10 minutes) presentation to a small audience comprised of your fellow researchers.


This course is designed for students with some presentation experience. It is possible to attend this course as an individual workshop, although we would recommend that you try to attend the series starting with the Basic Presentation Skills course.
