Can you imagine yourself on stage in front of an audience, improvising a theatrical scene without any preparation whatsoever? Most people find this idea daunting. Yet improvisational theatre, or improv, is the art of doing just that - creating spontaneous scenes, with no rehearsals, script, or planning. Improv is a joyful and playful art form, and often results in powerful scenes, with a strong sense of art created in the moment.
Aside from the fun and artistic value, improv is also a very powerful tool for professional development, and imparts skills that are rarely taught or trained in any other discipline – such as spontaneity, acceptance of others’ ideas, thinking on our feet, and overcoming the fear of failure. It boosts confidence and greatly improves public speaking, communications, collaboration, and presentation skills – all transferrable skills, which are highly valuable, in particular for scientists.
This course will teach you the basics of improv theatre in 8 weekly sessions lasting 2 hours each. Intended for beginners, it requires no prior theatrical experience. You don’t need to be funny or quick with words. It will culminate in a performance (optional), showcasing our work in front of a live audience. You will be surprised with how much you will have learned, and with how it will affect you. To say nothing of the fun you will have in the process!
