New

Mon 24 May 2021

Description

Dates are:

Capturing your audience’s attention and keeping it is vital for any type of public engagement. Having a good story to tell and then telling it in a compelling way enables you to connect complex subjects with a wide audience. This module takes you through the art and science of storytelling: exploring attention and motivation, dramatic structure, rhetorical devices, visual enhancements, and peripheral influences so that you can craft your own engaging story.

This programme will run over a week comprising: Two 1hr-1.5hr theory workshops One 1-hour showcase at the end of the week to share your work and receive valuable feedback from the rest of the group.

You are required to attend all three sessions** Optional 1-1 mentoring sessions

Training will be provided by Dr Lucinda Spokes, Head of Public Engagement and Sarah Cruise, Eloquential

By the end of this week participants will:

• Understand how to capture and maintain attention • Identify ways in which they can motivate an audience to engage with their own research • Use dramatic tools to structure and enhance their story • Explore ways of increasing memorability through visuals, imagination, and rhetorical devices • Appreciate the importance of peripheral influences (style of writing, sound of voice, visual appearance etc) and how to ensure that they are most supportive of your story • Have created a story about their research to engage with a public audience
