This is an introductory course which is required for users and supervisors of Class 3B and Class 4 lasers, before they receive hands-on training for use of specific lasers, and for registering as an "Authorized Laser User" in accordance with University of Cambridge and Department of Physics policy and procedure.

A short briefing for anyone who wishes to use X-ray generators at Department of Physics, University of Cambridge. Required before attending hands-on training on specific X-ray equipment and part of registrations as "Ionising Radiation User" (for details see this page).

This course is aimed at Physics staff who carry out manual handling as an integral part of their job. It is designed to provide them with the skills and knowledge needed to assess manual handling activities and use techniques to avoid injuries.

Theory and practice session on safe manual handling within you work area. This session will relate directly to the manual handling tasks that you undertake daily.

Theory and practice session on safe manual handling.

This induction is required for anyone planning to work unsupervised at the Maxwell Centre, Department of Physics.

It has two parts:

  • Part 1 (this course) is for people working anywhere in the building
  • Part 2 is only for those working at the Maxwell laboratories

You may only attend this course if you have passed Physics Health & Safety: H&S Induction Part 1 Briefing and Fire Safety Training (see "prerequisites" below).

This course is on VLE (Cambridge Moodle). When you book on this course an email will be sent to you with self-enrolment instructions.

General induction for users of the Physics of Medicine (PoM) building. This includes a guided tour of the facility.

Participants must have started the access process for PoM with the Rutherford Hub before booking onto this course. Participants will gain access to PoM only after successfully completing the Physics H&S Induction - see "Related Courses" below.

A short (10 minute) briefing covering the biological and other hazards to watch out for when walking through the PoM or carrying out independent non-experimental work, such as maintenance, cleaning, repairs to equipment, giving first aid, taking items through to Maxwell and vice versa, OR accompanying others who need authorised access (e.g. contractors).

If you will be located at the PoM or doing experimental work, you should attend the full PoM Induction instead (see "Related Courses").
