A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

The course is designed to give participants an overview of the history and principles of the Lean methodology, and an explanation of some of the basic tools used to make improvements to processes. This session will provide some basic tools that can be used immediately to facilitate a continuous improvement way of working

This course is accredited with the LCS (Lean Competency System), a certificate will be provided on completion of a short assessment.

PLEASE NOTE that this course will be taught live online, with tutors available to help you throughout if have any questions. All resources and lectures will be recorded and uploaded to the course VLE page so that you will be able to access that information even if technical or time zone restrictions means that you aren't able to join us for all of the live sessions.

This award winning virtually delivered course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R or Python software environments. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the course focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the biological sciences.

There are three core goals for this course:

  1. Use R or Python confidently for statistics and data analysis
  2. Be able to analyse datasets using standard statistical techniques
  3. Know which tests are and are not appropriate

Both R and Python are free software environments that are suitable for statistical and data analysis.

In this course, we explore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypothesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The focus of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and developing robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying statistical theory.

After the course you should feel confident to be able to select and implement common statistical techniques using R or Python and moreover know when, and when not, to apply these techniques.

This course will help you understand how to critically evaluate medical research articles, with a particular emphasis on evaluating the reliability, trustworthiness, and applicability of an article in informing evidence-based practice and decision-making in a healthcare context.

We will send you the article in advance, and it is a prerequisite that you read it before attending the session, and bring a copy with you to class.

This discussion based workshop will provide an opportunity for an update on the recent exciting additions to support for disabled library users and the work of the DRC. As a response to the unusual circumstances we are all finding ourselves in the majority of the workshop will build on example scenarios to discuss and get feedback on the most accessible and effective strategies for the pandemic and beyond.

The workshop will be delivered by Patrick Dowson (Accessibility Services Manager) and Lindsay Jones (Accessibility Services Coordinator) from the Libraries Accessibility Services team. They are dedicated to providing equal library access for all students across the university, including providing alternate formats for disabled students. They will be joined by Kirsty Wayland, Disability Development Consultant at the DRC. This session will be on line via Microsoft Teams.

In this session we will discuss some digital wellbeing techniques and tools to improve your focus and ability to switch off. We’ll talk about a framework of how we work with technology collectively. The concept of Digital Culture - Work Design will also be introduced, to show how to create positive digital habits when remote working, leading to a healthy, creative and productive digital life.

Questions to think about before this session:

  • What is our relationship with technology?
  • What can we do about it?

Voice Workshop 1 new Finished 12:30 - 13:30

This series of four voice workshops, led by Professor Helen Odell-Miller OBE from Anglia Ruskin University, will focus upon wellbeing through vocal exercises and singing, which will be fun, relaxing and non-demanding. No prior musical knowledge or singing experience is needed and sessions will be accessible for all, whether you are a seasoned singer, or new to it. The workshops aim to improve motivation and the ability to concentrate, relax and connect. In addition participants will have time to focus upon their wellbeing and achieving their full potential.

Research shows that using the voice creatively, can motivate and enable our wellbeing and functioning, particularly when recovering from illness. The workshops will facilitate expression, social interaction, intellectual stimulation, fun and connection, through virtual vocal interaction, including movement.

What to expect The four stand-alone workshops across four weeks will include relaxation exercises, vocal warm-ups, vocal exercises and small group work in breakout rooms which, for those interested, could also include song writing.

Participants can keep their microphone off so no one can hear you; equally you can interact with others using your voice with the microphone on at certain points in the workshops if you prefer.

Limited places Due to the nature of the sessions, places on the Voice Workshops will be limited, with a waiting list in operation. If you have a place, please make every effort to attend, or let the EDI Team know if for any reason you will be unable to use your place so it can be offered to someone else in good time.

The facilitator Professor Helen Odell-Miller OBE is a Music Therapist and Director of the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research at Anglia Ruskin University.

Collaboration Tools: Microsoft Teams - Virtual Train the Trainer (Live Online using MS Teams) new (1 of 3) Finished 09:00 - 10:00 UIS Online Microsoft Teams 4

Are you new to teaching online? It is natural to feel apprehensive of this mode of delivery, virtual training has an additional skill set to those in a classroom based situation, and though your existing training skills remain essential, there is another layer of technical expertise to master.

This online virtual workshop will help build your confidence delivering training sessions and give you an opportunity to practice and to receive feedback from other trainers. The emphasis of the course is not about the method and practice of teaching as an academic subject or theoretical concept, this is a hands-on workshop where you can practice in a safe environment.

Before the workshop session, you must create an activity or convert one of your existing courses to an online version, and be prepared to present a 15-20 minute session. You will need to demonstrate that you have thought through and manged the pre-course bookings, communications and activities as well as competence using an online delivery tool.

The workshop will be friendly and supportive with a maximum of three participants. You must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

  • Session 1 is optional for those who are unfamiliar with the Teams application to receive basic hands on training.
  • Session 2 is guidance concerning the management of a successful online training event.
  • Session 3 is the peer-reviewed workshop, you will both teach a session and review the other instructors.

Though this is an informal training session you may like to review the competences required to achieve certification by CompTIA

If you book:

  • You should have Teams installed on your local computer, but you could deliver your course using a different tool such as Zoom, but no instruction using different tools is given.
  • You will need a webcam and a mic.
  • Add the event to your calendar by following the link in your booking confirmation email and click Add to Calendar.
  • Install the Microsoft Teams app. (It is possible to join using Edge or Chrome but there is less functionality when using a browser).
  • Important: The instructor cannot troubleshoot access to Microsoft Teams on the day of the course. If you are in an institution that is managing their own Teams tenancy (CAMENT, JBS, medschl and some of the colleges) then you may not have access to the files or calendar used in the course. Please contact the instructor in advance to discuss this.
  • If you are using Hermes for your email you will not be able to create a scheduled meeting, but Breakout Rooms can be created in a Meet now.
  • It's advisable to make a test call in advance of the session.

This session covers the theory and practice of budgeting in the University, how to interpret department budget reports and understand the causes of overspends (and underspends) against budgets. The course refers closely to Chapter 3 of the Financial Procedures Manual

The joint induction aims to provide a broad introduction and overview to all development and alumni relations staff, providing information about the ins and outs of Collegiate Cambridge, as it relates to our area of work. Have you ever been concerned about a situation and wanted to help, but didn't? Hearing a racist/sexist/homophobic joke in the tea room? Seeing an inappropriate touch of a friend? Watching a colleague wince at being belittled or interrupted in a team meeting? You're not alone, this is more common for many of us than you might think.

Come along to this short session to find out why this happens and what it means to be an active bystander. This includes simple changes and actions you can take to support others around you without confrontation and, over time, support a more inclusive environment for all of us to live and work in.

STEMM Libraries present: ”working together” virtual study room new Finished 13:00 - 16:30 Cambridge University Libraries Online

To support your studies, STEMM Libraries are offering a “working together” virtual study room. Set your goals for your afternoon of study and work informally alongside other students in a virtual space.

How will the study room work?

  • You don’t have to stay for the whole afternoon You can pop in, leave, return, and take breaks as you please. We are asking people to book so we manage access to the room so pick whatever date(s) work for you!
  • There will be a 30 minute comfort break halfway through the session.
  • Library staff will be present in the room if you have questions about resources or anything else library-related. We will also be there to make sure everything runs smoothly.
  • These study rooms will be delivered through Zoom and a link will be sent out as part of your booking.
  • Closed captioning will be enabled alongside the option to use breakout rooms for private discussion as needed.

Please note, the study rooms will run from the 17th March – 9th June initially.
