Description

All courses offer general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence and elements of scientifically relevant content.

At Advanced Beginners level the focus is on every day and real-time, oral/aural communication. The course features a functional-notional syllabus and grammar points are analysed in context.

Please note that the descriptors below relate to the full 30 hrs course. You are now enrolling in the introductory part (1st third, 10hrs) of the whole course.

Target audience

All members of the University (please note that the courses will feature some scientific content).

Prerequisites

A1 level of the CEFR or an older GCSE or a little knowledge of the language acquired informally.

Objectives
  • Listening/Speaking: express opinions on abstract/cultural matters in a limited way or offer advice within a known area, and understand instructions or public announcements.
  • Reading: understand routine information and articles, and the general gist of non-routine information within a familiar area.
  • Writing: write informal e-mails or make notes on familiar or predictable matters.
Aims
  • To build on a basic understanding and an appreciation of the salient linguistic features;
  • To establish the learner as a fairly confident language user in a range of predictable everyday situations;
  • To increase students’ knowledge of the cultural background of the target language countries within the context of language teaching.
Format

Face-to-face, classroom teaching and multimedia online resources (Moodle).

Charging
  • Students Fees: £100 to be paid online. Please select ‘Concessionary’ under the course fee when you make your booking.
  • Postdocs/Staff Fees: £110 to be paid online. Please select ‘All charged’ under the course fee when you make your booking.
  • Links to the online store will be provided with your confirmation email.
  • Payment is required within 24 hours of your booking to secure your place.
  • Refunds available after the first lesson only.
  • Payment for the courses is made on the Online Store (CULP General Purpose courses), (Raven log in).
  • Course materials can be found on Moodle (Raven log in), once the course has started.
Duration

Ten taught lessons (50 minutes) plus online learning. Total commitment expects 10 lessons + 15 hrs of self-study.

Frequency

Once a year but generally subject to demand.
