Description

The courses are delivered in a blended-learning mode, face-to-face and online. The focus is on spoken, oral/aural communicative competence. Students are required to attend to online multimedia materials and read the proscribed texts in their own time so that the classroom time is dedicated to face-to-face communication/discussion.

Topics covered

The Course introduces students to the following functions and notions:

  • Hiring a boat/bicycle/car
  • Talking about sports
  • Talking about the past
  • Talking about regular activities
  • Enquiring at the tourist office
  • Shopping for food, clothes and gifts
  • Asking for directions
  • Using public transport
  • Visiting the doctor / chemist
Objectives

By the end of the Course students will be able to:

  • Listening/Speaking: Express simple opinions or requirements in a familiar context.
  • Reading: Read fairly confidently the Hiragana and Katakana characters. Understand straightforward information within a known area, such as on products and signs and simple textbooks or reports on familiar matters using Japanese characters.
  • Writing: Complete forms and write short simple letters or postcards related to personal information.
Aims

At the Basic 2 level the main aims are:

  • To enhance students understanding of to the complex historical and cultural background of Japan;
  • To further develop the understanding and an appreciation of the salient linguistic features of the Japanese language;
  • To establish the learner as a fairly confident language user in a wider range of every-day predictable situations.
