CULP: Academic German for Archive Work Workshop

Description

The Academic German for Archive Work workshops are offered a number of times during the academic year, based on demand. The sessions are held either at the Language Centre or on the premises of one of the two participating Schools.

Target audience

The workshops are free of charge to graduate students in the Schools of Arts & Humanities and Humanities & Social Sciences, funded via the University's Researcher Development Fund.

Prerequisites

Ideally students should be attending a German Academic Reading course or a CULP General Language Course at basic or intermediate level. And/or already have:

An elementary level comparable to level A2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework for Languages): 'Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance. Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.'

Or an Intermediate 1 level comparable to level B1 of the CEFR : 'Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.'

Aims

The workshops are designed to enhance students' language competence and ability to carry out research in the specific context of a German speaking country archive and/or library. Different types of archives and their discrete functions will be explored as well as methods of information gathering. A particular focus will be placed on the difficulties that may be encountered when examining a variety of German scripts from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century.
