Description

All courses offer general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence and where possible elements of scientifically relevant content.

At Absolute Beginners 2 level, the focus is on every day and real-time, oral/aural communication. The course features a functional-notional syllabus and grammar points are analysed in context.

Please note that the descriptors below relate to the full 30 hrs course. You are now enrolling in the second part (2nd third, 10hrs) of the whole course.

Target audience

All members of the University (please note that the courses will feature some scientific content). Students who completed the Absolute Beginners 1 course, false beginners (some limited knowledge and/or prior exposure to the language).

Prerequisites

Absolute beginners 1 course, false beginners.

Topics covered

The Course introduces students to the following functions and notions:

  • To place orders at the bar or in a café, talk about likes, dislikes, ask people what they want to drink; ask for the bill.
  • To go shopping in the market
  • To talk about their work/study and daily routine
  • To ask for and understand directions and traffic signs and buy a train ticket
Objectives
  • Listening/Speaking

Understand some basic instructions and take part in a brief informal conversation on a predictable topic.

  • Reading

Understand a set of basic notices and instructions.

  • Writing

Write a brief informal e-mail on a predictable topic.

Aims
  • To develop a basic understanding and an appreciation of the salient linguistic features;
  • To enable the learner to communicate in a range of predictable every-day situations;
  • To introduce students to the cultural background within the context of language learning.
Format

Face-to-face, classroom teaching and multimedia online resources (Moodle).

Charging
  • Students Fees: £100 to be paid online. Please select ‘Concessionary’ under the course fee when you make your booking.
  • Postdocs/Staff Fees: £110 to be paid online. Please select ‘All charged’ under the course fee when you make your booking.
  • Links to the online store will be provided with your confirmation email.
  • Payment is required within 24 hours of your booking to secure your place.
  • Refunds available after the first lesson only.
  • Payment for the courses is made on the Online Store (CULP General Purpose courses), (Raven log in).
  • Course materials can be found on Moodle (Raven log in), once the course has started.
Duration

Ten taught lessons (50 minutes) plus online learning. Total commitment expects 10 lessons + 15 hrs of self-study.

Frequency

Once a year but generally subject to demand.
