Description

This introductory course is intended for researchers interested in creating a project website to engage the public with their research. The course will cover start-up, design, management and promotion of project websites, sharing best practice and practical advice on aspects such as:

  • setting website aims and planning the basics
  • dealing with web developers and partners
  • using content management systems and repositories
  • making websites discoverable, user-friendly and inclusive
  • securing long-term sustainability
  • presenting and sharing research data
  • engaging the public through participation
  • dealing with website copyrights and ethical issues
  • creating awareness of websites via associated social media channels
  • evaluating audience reach and engagement.

Objectives

The course aims to equip researchers with basic knowledge to start, design, manage and promote websites for public engagement with research. Objectives include:

  • to develop an understanding of the process and resources needed for creating and running websites for public engagement
  • to introduce a range of examples of innovative research project websites and stimulate ideas for researchers’ future websites
  • to familiarise participants with a selection of methods to capture and represent research data and engage with the public through websites
  • to share experiences of creating and running websites, as well as top tips and resources.
System requirements

Good internet connection: this course will be held in Zoom.

The trainer would like to hear from all participants ahead of the session, so as to make the training more relevant to their specific needs.   • specific topics you would like to see covered in the training
  • questions related to difficulties you are facing with your own website.

Please note that also for the one-to-one sessions, researchers will be asked to outline what they will seek to discuss in advance.

Duration

Two mandatory 90-minute sessions, and one optional 15-minute one-to-one session with the trainer.
