Researchers are often told that they need to 'publish or perish' but now there is a new threat to worry about. Problem or predatory publishers exist to take advantage of confusion around open access publishing by aiming to trick authors into publishing or presenting their work for a fee but not offering editorial services. At best this is a wasted chance to publish elsewhere and at worst it could have a lasting impact on academic reputations.

This self-paced, interactive module allows learners to think about how these publishers operate, how to avoid them and some of the key considerations that should be taken into account around any offer to publish or present.

This module covers the following topics:

• Defining the problem.
• Characteristics of problem publishers.
• Why they are/not a problem.
• Warning signs to watch for.

At the end of this module, learners will be able to :

• Define problem/predatory publishers.
• Discuss why some people see them as a problem and others see a valuable business

model.

• Recognise a potential problem publisher.
• Critically appraise any offers to publish or present that they receive.
