This individually focused and completely confidential one-to-one coaching session will help you in identifying how to further utilise your voice and gain greater awareness of how you present yourself, so that you can develop new approaches to your communication in a wide range of professional situations. It will focus on your own specific requirements, but could include anything from practical points about elocution, ideas for how to hold the attention of a room, or new confidence in speaking up as an emerging leader in your research field. This module provides an introduction to the theory and concepts of network analysis. Attendees will learn how to construct protein-protein interaction networks and subsequently use these to analyse large-scale datasets generated these to by techniques such as RNA-Seq or mass-spec proteomics. The course will focus on giving attendees hands-on experience in the use of Cytoscape and selected network analysis apps. Also note: This event is part of a series of short introductions focusing on EMBL-EBI resources. If you want to learn more about these separate training events, see the Related Courses section below. The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level. This course covers viewing, processing and recording data for applications, adding notes and attachments, generating rejection emails, generating electronic reference requests, processing applicants through the selection process and transferring successful applicants to CHRIS. |

Anyone who is a first-time user of unsealed radioactive substances is expected to attend this course before they begin the work. Users of radioactive substances who are new to the University should also attend. This course also acts as a refresher for experienced users and for users from other institutions or countries. There will be time for discussion and questions at the end of the session, and a self-assessment exercise of attendees’ core knowledge will be carried out. |

JTC: French Conversation Hours

This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2 level upwards) a chance to practise speaking French with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level. Topics covered will include time management tips, advice on prioritisation, tools for project management and an introduction to monotasking. With some mention of the electronic resources available to you over the long vacation and on support provided by the Department of Engineering Library. Principal Investigators, Do You Know How to Fulfil Your Health and Safety Responsibilities?

Principal Investigators, research group heads and supervisors have duties and responsibilities both in law and under University Policy where the health and safety of group members (and others that may be influenced by their research activities) are concerned. All PIs, group heads and supervisors are encouraged to attend this course which will quickly inform you of what you must do to comply with the law, keep you staff and students safe and reduce the possibility of litigation, thus reducing the overall risk to the University. |
These courses will not be formally assessed and students who attend regularly (12/15 sessions) will receive a Certificate of Attendance. CULP’s Introduction to Language and Culture Hebrew course, designed for absolute beginners, promises to offer a welcoming and exciting start to your Hebrew studies. Both spoken and written Modern Hebrew will be taught two hours per week during Michaelmas and Lent terms. You will be given the opportunity to express yourself, read and write in the target language, and develop your ability to understand native speakers. Realistic amounts of homework will be given and students will be encouraged to avail themselves of Hebrew media within the Language Centre. In the Easter Term, Jess would like to invite colleagues to come and join her for an informal chat in small groups over a cup of tea. Jess paused these popular sessions due to the pressure of work in the Michaelmas Term, but would like to start them up again in the Easter Term and Summer. These sessions will provide an opportunity for you to get to know each other better and to talk with Jess about any issues that are affecting you. Bookings for each session will close as soon as ten people have signed up, so first come, first served!
