Capturing your audience’s attention and keeping it is vital for any type of public engagement. Having a good story to tell and then telling it in a compelling way enables you to connect with a wide audience. This module takes you through the art and science of storytelling: exploring attention and motivation, dramatic structure, rhetorical devices, visual enhancements, and peripheral influences so that you can craft your own engaging story.

The course will be led by Sarah Cruise. Sarah is passionate about the art and science of communication and eloquential is her rattle bag of knowledge, skills and experience which she uses to train, coach and facilitate. Sarah collects research from areas such as psychology and neuroscience, along with practitioners experience from the performing arts to fill her bag of tricks, tips and advice. Sarah has been involved in public engagement training since 2006, working closely with Cambridge University. She is also a peripatetic teacher of communication and performance skills in schools and a co-presenter on the Gin & Topic podcast.

There are many aspects of the current research culture that negatively impact on the mental health of researchers. At Cambridge, we have set out our ambitions for creating a better research culture in an institutional action plan.

Liz Simmonds (Postdoc Academy) and Yi Ting Chua (president of the PdOC Society) from the University's research culture working group, talk about how the plan aims to improve different aspects of research culture, and following from that help to improve researchers' mental health.

The Staff Review and Development process provides the opportunity for supervisors, managers and academics to engage in constructive discussion with their staff or academic colleagues about current and future work and their personal and career development.

This course will focus on practical advice and development of a range of skills and techniques that may be used effectively when reviewing others. It will provide an opportunity for review practice, discussion with other reviewers and provide useful reminders of good practice.

Want to practice giving Teams Live Events? Then join us in this informal introductory session to manage and deliver a webinar. The course is not about presentation skills, it is to master the mechanics of managing the smooth transition between different presenters and content. The maximum number of participants for this course is limited to 2.

You must have the following items installed or available on your computer to participate:

1. The Teams desktop app installed on your computer.
2. The Teams Calendar available on the Teams interface. (You must be using Microsoft Exchange Online for your email to enable the Teams Calendar). Details on how to migrate from Hermes to Exchange can be found here.
3. The button on the Teams Calendar interface necessary to create a Teams Live Event. (To enable the button on your system you need to request the ability to create Live Events via the Self Service portal). Note! this can take up to 48 hours for the change to come into effect.

Voice Projection: An Introduction (1 of 2) Finished 10:00 - 12:00 Online


If you occasionally suffer from vocal strain or wish to discover your true vocal range and power then this course is for you. We will work together to improve your vocal projection using vocal techniques practised by actors by using various physical and vocal exercises. We will discuss using your voice in a recording or speaking to camera and practice exercises for improved articulation. Be prepared to join in the exercises and makes some noise!

Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research.

The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion.

Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use French and practise reading aloud.

Virtual - Dangerous Goods by Air (IATA) Course (3 of 3) Finished 10:00 - 16:00 N/A - online webinar

This is a CAA approved 3-day training course and open book examination, covering the requirements of the IATA Dangerous Goods by Air Regulations. Someone possessing this qualification will be an asset to their department as carriers ask for more assurances about the packaging and labelling of cargoes.

Note that each participant will need the use of an up to date IATA manual for this course. (The manual usually changes annually but if you have a 2020 version that will be acceptable this year.) A few copies are available on loan but will need to be returned to the Trainer (by post) after the course. Other participants will have to purchase or borrow a manual independently.

There will be a 1000 start on the first day but subsequent start, finish and break times will be a matter of negotiation with the trainer.

There is unlikely to be another full IATA course organised centrally until 2023.

Led by Sarah-Cate Blake, Education Officer at the Fitzwilliam Museum, this session will include ideas and resources for those working with or caring for young people.

A set of ideas and techniques for Young People to put into practice and facilitate their own self-regulated wellbeing resilience. Some of these are creative and practical activities, others are from trauma informed yoga and mindfulness.

This online course is geared towards non-native speakers who feel that they would benefit from the opportunity to have frequent practice in giving presentations in English. It will consist of a mix of teacher input, individual presentations and regular feedback. We will meet together for the first class (11.15am on Wednesday 28 April), and thereafter we will meet mainly in small groups of 4-6 students, at 11.15 am on either Wednesday or Thursday mornings. Depending on exact numbers, each group session will be between 1 hour and 1.5 hours long. Groups and precise times will be decided in the first class.

This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2 level upwards) a chance to practise speaking French with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level.

Participants from French Advanced CULP are warmly invited to attend the French Conversation Hour.

The way we present ourselves influences other people’s perceptions of our effectiveness, trustworthiness, and credibility.

Nonverbal behaviour varies according to our gender. And both men and women are bound by specific expectations around the way they present themselves.

Men are traditionally expected to be more competitive, confident, and powerful. Stereotypically male nonverbal behaviours, which project a lot of strength, serve men well in the workplace.

Strength gets things done. Strength commands respect. Strength speeds up career progression.

But strength alone isn’t enough. To lead, you need to gain other people’s trust, build rapport, and connect with others. In other words, you need warmth. Leaders who are strong but lack warmth are perceived as intimidating, inspire resentment, and struggle to get commitment - rather than mere compliance - from their teams.

While men are expected to be strong, women are expected to be kind, cooperative, and nurturing. Stereotypically female nonverbals, which signal warmth, help women connect with others, build rapport, and gain trust.

But warmth on its own isn’t enough for effective leadership. People who are warm but lack strength are not taken seriously and are rarely seen as “leadership material”.

To be effective leaders, women and men need to learn how to balance the qualities of strength and warmth. In this workshop, you will learn how to translate the intangible concept of authority and approachability into observable behaviours.

Join Natacha Wilson, from Cambridge Insights, to find out more about project management techniques and approaches which can help you manage your research project in the midst of a pandemic. We will explore how to assess your project's health and ways to stay on track, manage expectations and mitigate external risks. The session will include a short presentation, followed by a Q&A.

To support your studies, STEMM Libraries are offering a “working together” virtual study room. Set your goals for your afternoon of study and work informally alongside other students in a virtual space.

How will the study room work?

  • You don’t have to stay for the whole afternoon You can pop in, leave, return, and take breaks as you please. We are asking people to book so we manage access to the room so pick whatever date(s) work for you!
  • There will be a 30 minute comfort break halfway through the session.
  • Library staff will be present in the room if you have questions about resources or anything else library-related. We will also be there to make sure everything runs smoothly.
  • These study rooms will be delivered through Zoom and a link will be sent out as part of your booking.
  • Closed captioning will be enabled alongside the option to use breakout rooms for private discussion as needed.

This conversation hour offers learners with a lower-intermediate conversational ability (A2/B1 level upwards) a chance to improve their speaking skills with others in a relaxed and informal setting led by a native-speaker facilitator. Come along and take it in turns to choose a conversation topic of personal interest each week. This could be one that's familiar to you but you want to practise more. Devise 4-5 questions to get the conversation started. Example topics could be holidays, food, traditions or hobbies. Receive feedback on your pronunciation and accuracy, and try stretching yourself further.

Suitable for those who completed Arabic Elementary 1 and 2 Culp courses or those who have a B1 level in the CEFR.
