Grants Part 1: Getting Started in Research Grants

A short online course that provides a basic introduction to the key features of Research Grants and how they are managed in the University.

Please note it does not include detailed guidance of how to apply for grants (e.g. using pFACT/X5) – please contact the Research Operations Office for advice.

• Departmental staff who will have responsibility for using the grants module in CUFS.
• Users of iProcurement and Accounts Payable who code item of expenditure to Grants and need an understanding of how the modules interact.
• Anyone who just requires a basic overview of how grants operate.
• (NB, this course is a pre-requisite for those who will be attending the Grants for Administrators course.)

For the participant to have a basic understanding of:

• What is a Research Grant: the relationship between award, project and the coding used.
• What is fEC and the costs that are charged to grants centrally.
• Typical sponsors’ terms and conditions and the significance of key dates.
• How the grants module interacts with other modules in CUFS and the impact of these dates and conditions in AP and iProc.
• How the University physically receives the funding from the sponsor.
• The core responsibilities of the Department, Research Operations and the Finance Division in relation to grants

To provide an overview of the Grants life-cycle and introduce some of the key terminology and features that have to be considered.
