Description

The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence. At a basic level, the focus is on every day and real-time, oral/aural communication. Each course features a functional-notional syllabus and grammar points are analysed in context.

The course introduces students to the following functions and notions such as:

  • Titles and terms of address 
  • Introducing friends and family 
  • Saying what you do for a living
  • At the passport desk 
  • At customs 
  • In the arrivals hall
  • Finding a suitable hotel room 
  • Checking in at the hotel 
  • Saying how long you want to stay
  • Offering, refusing, accepting
  • Saying what you like and don’t like 
  • Ordering a meal 
  • Expressing appreciation
  • Making enquiries 
  • Buying and changing money 
  • Shopping in a store, market 
  • Describing countries and cities 
  • Reading short texts in Arabic etc.
Objectives

By the end of the Course students will be able to:

  • Listening/Speaking: Express simple opinions or requirements in a familiar context.
  • Reading: Understand straightforward information within a known area, such as on products and signs and simple textbooks or reports on familiar matters.
  • Writing: Complete forms and write short simple letters or postcards related to personal information.
Aims

At the Basic 2 level the main aims are:

  • To further develop a basic understanding and an appreciation of the salient linguistic features of the MSA;
  • To establish the learner as a fairly confident language user in a wider range of every-day, predictable situations;
  • To enhance students’ understanding of to the complex historical and cultural background of the Arab world.

Charging
  • Students Fees: £275 to be paid online. Please select ‘Concessionary’ under the course fee when you make your booking.
  • Staff Fees: £305 to be paid online. Please select ‘All charged’ under the course fee when you make your booking.
  • Links to the online store will be provided with your confirmation email.
  • Payment is required within 24 hours of your booking to secure your place.
  • Refunds available after the first lesson only.
  • Payment for the courses is made on the Online Store (CULP General Purpose courses), (Raven log in).
  • Course materials can be found on Moodle (Raven log in), once the course has started.
