Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research.

The Academic German for Archive Work workshops are offered during the academic year, based on demand. Each workshop lasts three hours and enrols up to 15 participants. For more information, please check our website.

This course investigates Schubert's great song cycle Winterreise, D.911 (1827), from a variety of perspectives, but begins from a single premise: that it is impossible to study the music of the work without a detailed understanding of the poems by Wilhelm Müller that Schubert set, and of the interaction between music and poetic text.

With this in mind, the course is divided into two parts. The first part (to take place in Michaelmas term) will be devoted to the socio-political background in which Müller writes his poems, to the central topoi the Winterreise evokes, as well as to Schubert's setting of German, and to ways of approaching Lieder texts more generally. The first four classes will be introductory; students whose knowledge of German is equivalent to A-level or beyond are welcome to attend these classes, or can join the course for weeks 5-8. Anyone with German skills below A-level standard, or who took A-level German but has not studied the language recently, should attend from week 1.

The second part of the course (Lent term) will build on the material in the first half of the course to look at Winterreise as a cycle, and to study individual songs, as well as considering the piece in relation to Schubert's other late works, to the history of the Lied, to wider currents of musical and literary romanticism, and to its later reception and its performance history.

CULP for Historians is a course that aims at supporting 1st year History students in reading German historical texts. The course complements the classes of the Themes and Sources option and features an online multi-media component, which is available on LC Online (Raven access). The online component of this course can be used for self-access learning by any member of the University of Cambridge.

This course will start at Basic level and move quickly through the basics of Italian grammar. Students with some background in the Italian language (Intermediate level) are most welcome to join the group in January (Lent term) when we start reading more complex, original texts.

These Portuguese reading courses are designed for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Latin American, Brazilian, Portuguese or Lusophone language, culture and heritage.

They offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce critical readings and interpretations.

The classes are going to be conducted primarily in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for oral and listening practice. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Portuguese.

The Basic course does not require any knowledge of the language while the prerequisite for the Intermediate course is a CEFR A2 level. The courses offer the possibility of progression and Basic students are strongly encouraged to continue with the Intermediate course.

Please note that these courses are attended by a number of very able, Spanish speaking students of Latin American studies and that the class dynamics are likely to be fast paced. For the rest of the students this might be challenging but also very rewarding and conducive to sound progress.

• Recognition of the compositional structures of the texts;
• Recognition of basic use of Portuguese grammar units The students will be asked to perform weekly readings of a wide variety of texts.

This intensive Persian course is designed particularly for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Persian language, culture and heritage. However the course can be equally useful for those who are interested in learning Persian for more general purposes.

We offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce spoken and written language on variety of topics.

The classes are going to be conducted more or less in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for speaking and listening practice in Persian. And the medium of class will swiftly change to Persian by the end of the term. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Persian and/or communicate in Persian with native speakers.

Part IB Paper 10 Elective Topics I The Spanish for Musicians course will:

• Teach and practice some fundamental language structures and principles at a speedy pace, using a variety of short texts.
• Introduce and practice reading skills.
• Give help and support with reading a selection of short extracts from the reading list considering vocabulary, structures, context, and general language.
