	An Introduction to Machine Learning (3 of 3) Finished 09:30 - 17:00 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building Machine learning gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. It encompasses a broad range of approaches to data analysis with applicability across the biological sciences. Lectures will introduce commonly used algorithms and provide insight into their theoretical underpinnings. In the practicals students will apply these algorithms to real biological data-sets using the R language and environment. Please be aware that the course syllabus is currently being updated following feedback from the last event; therefore the agenda below will be subjected to changes. The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level. 	Tableau for Viewers - Research Finished 09:30 - 11:30 Finance Division, Greenwich House, Ferrara Room (IT Training Room) Tableau Server is an online application available to all members of the university to access Tableau dashboards and visualisations. Tableau Viewer is entry level access to Tableau Server and allows you to view Tableau content created by others.
10:00	How To Nail Your Literature Review 2: Bringing It All Together Finished 10:00 - 11:00 Department of Physics, Maxwell Centre, JJ Thomson Seminar Room (Floor 2) This session will develop skills that will help you get the most out of your literature review. From a foundation of effective search strategies, you will learn how to critically appraise academic literature, techniques for getting through sources quickly and evaluating their relevance, engaging with key material and beginning to write your literature review itself, as well as ensuring accuracy in your citations and references. Please bring a laptop, tablet or other web-enabled device with you to the session.

More and more researchers are sharing their data to improve reproducibility, get more citations and spark collaborations, yet the process can be daunting. We will explore the benefits of sharing data, as well as any concerns you might have, and give you practical tips and tools to ensure that you make the most of the opportunity to open up your data for the world.
11:00	CULP: German Basic 1 (total beginners) for Academic Purposes (LAP) (6 of 15) Finished 11:00 - 12:30 Zoom Video Communication Software This weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts: The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc. The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate. 	Green Labs: Carbon Flows in the Lab (West) Finished 11:00 - 12:00 Department of Physics, Maxwell Centre, Red Boardroom (Floor 3) We know that laboratories use lots of energy, water and resources. We know they produce mountains of waste. We know we can do better. But where should we invest our efforts to improve things? In this workshop we will help you become more conscious of the carbon flows in your labs and help you identify the worthwhile improvements that you can make. 12:00	JTC: Advanced French Conversation Hours (5 of 6) Finished 12:00 - 13:00 17 Mill Lane Teaching Room 2 This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2 level upwards) a chance to practise speaking French with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level. Participants from French Advanced CULP are warmly invited to attend the French Conversation Hour. 16:15	English: Living in Britain Finished 16:15 - 18:15 Department of Engineering, CLIC 2 Living in Britain This practical seminar provides a further opportunity for participants to learn more about key aspects of living in Britain. As in the previous seminars (Michaelmas and Lent Term 2019), it will focus on the intercultural understanding needed to study and work successfully within the University environment; it will also focus more widely on aspects of British life and culture, considering any topics (e.g. tourism, history, politics, class, customs) that participants would like to discuss, and drawing where possible on their impressions and experiences. Those who attended the previous seminar are welcome, and all participants are encouraged to email any questions or particular areas of interest in advance to Sheila Dodds (smd48). NB. 18:00	CULP: Portuguese Advanced (13 of 15) Finished 18:00 - 20:00 17 Mill Lane Teaching Room 4 The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence. At advanced level the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course. One of the aims of the advanced level courses is also presentation skills as the courses aim to cater for the academic needs (i.e. research, conferences) of the students.
