Introduction to Python for Biologists (ONLINE LIVE TRAINING) (3 of 4) In progress 09:30 - 12:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core concepts of Python including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. These are illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to write simple Python programs.

Virtual - Grants Part 2: Grant reports in Cognos (1 of 2) Not bookable 09:30 - 11:30 Via MS Teams

This course will concentrate on how to use the Cognos reporting tool to help manage departmental research grants. These reports can be divided into three main categories:

  • Summary financial information for Projects
  • Detailed expenditure analysis
  • Management reports for Grants due to close

In this course we will not access the Grants module in CUFS.

Dangerous Goods by Air (IATA) Course charged (2 of 3) Not bookable 09:30 - 17:00 Chemistry of Health

This is a CAA approved 3-day training course and open book examination, covering the requirements of the IATA Dangerous Goods by Air Regulations. Someone possessing this qualification will be an asset to their department as carriers ask for more assurances about the packaging and labelling of cargoes.

  • Note 1: There is a charge for this training (see 'Charging' section below).
  • Note 2: Each participant will need to purchase and bring an up to date IATA manual (which is updated annually) for this Course. A few copies can be loaned if requested at least two weeks prior to the training but others will have to purchase or borrow one independently.

There will be a 0930 start on the first day but subsequent start, finish and break times will be a matter of negotiation with the trainer.

The next full IATA course is due to be organised centrally in 2025.

This is course will help you get to grips with spreadsheet basics using Microsoft Excel. Communicating your work well, through both writing and presenting, are important skills in any successful research career.

Writing well doesn’t come naturally to most people - feeling comfortable writing powerful papers is something we can learn through theory and practice. Dr Anna Ploszajski's career is living proof of that!

In this workshop, you will gain the skills you need to write confidently and engagingly to any future audience, be they professionals or the public.

It will cover:

  • how to tailor your message to your audience
  • how to structure like a creative story
  • practical tips on using English language to increase the impact of your words.

No prior experience of writing is required – this training is for everyone from folks who detest writing, to regular communicators looking to step up their game to the next level.

The goal of our next Community of Practice is to map the support networks which are already established across the University. We aim to compile a document specifying who is doing what, where, to allow us to work in a more connected way across the University. In anticipation of this, you might want to think about which pieces of work you would like to bring up at the meeting, if you know anyone who is doing anything similar already who you would like to collaborate with, and what support you could use. We will also have a great speaker coming along to this session, with details to be provided soon!

Doing Qualitative Interviews (1 of 3) [Places] 10:30 - 11:00 SSRMP Zoom

Face-to-face interviews are used to collect a wide range of information in the social sciences. They are appropriate for the gathering of information on individual and institutional patterns of behaviour; complex histories or processes; identities and cultural meanings; routines that are not written down; and life-history events. Face-to-face interviews thus comprise an appropriate method to generate information on individual behaviour, the reasons for certain patterns of acting and talking, and the type of connection people have with each other.

The first session provides an overview of interviewing as a social research method, then focuses on the processes of organising and conducting qualitative interviews. The second session explores the ethics and practical constraints of interviews as a research method, particularly relevant when attempting to engage with marginalised or stigmatised communities. The third session focuses on organisation and analysis after interviews, including interpretation through coding and close reading.

In Easter Term, the course is entirely virtual, comprising the online resources, supported by 3 x zoom Q&A sessions.

This class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts:

The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc.

The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate.

Come along to this session to talk about what to expect from a Q&A, how to prepare, and how to handle challenging questions. You will get the chance to meet with other PhD students who are preparing to give conference papers, and work through some friendly activities to practice your question-answering skills!

Medicine: Writing a Systematic Review Protocol (for University and NHS) new [Places] 14:00 - 15:30 Cambridge University Libraries Online

Publishing a protocol -- stating in advance the search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, data analysis and other evaluative techniques -- is a core requirement for conducting a systematic review. The process of writing this protocol will also mean you have written in advance a large chunk of what will need to go into the finished systematic review, saving you a huge amount of time.

This session will cover the contents and types of information you will need to provide in your protocol, and will give attendees the opportunity to write a draft protocol, as well as highlighting helpful resources and further support.

A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Continuous Improvement team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

The course is delivered in a visual way. It offers 30 hours of classroom tuition in a group, (up to 16 students), and requires the students to study independently (or in pairs) for an additional 30 hours.
