Departmental health and safety induction for graduate students, undergraduate students (Part IB, II, or III) MASt students, visitors and staff starting study or work at the Department of Physics.
Session 1 of this briefing is for everyone and covers what to do in the event of an emergency, and how to report problems.
There will be a short break before Session 2, which is for people carrying out practical experiments in a laboratory, doing other practical (e.g. maintenance) work, managing events or other people.
When there are new staff at an induction, this will be preceded by a short HR induction.
Anyone only working in an office is not required to attend Session 2, unless they manage people or events.

By the end of Session 1, participants should be able to:
- Explain what to do if they hear a fire alarm, find a fire or need first aid
- Describe their own, their supervisor's and the department's responsibilities for health and safety
- Explain the requirements for safe working out of normal 'OPEN' hours of the department
- Find information on how to set up workstations so they avoid lost time due to musculoskeletal problems
By the end of Session 2, people doing practical experiments/work or managing events/others should also be able to:
- Identify hazards and related risks
- Consider how they can carry out their project/activity without undue risks to themselves and others
- Draft a risk assessment for their proposed project/event
- Justify their risk control measures to their supervisor and others
To enable students, staff and visitors to work safely at the Department of Physics, and comply with legal and other requirements, regardless of what they are doing.
Presentations, with short exercises
There will be a short written assessment after each session.
You must attend these sessions to be allowed to carry out any work at the Department.
If you were a summer student/visitor and have attended an induction in the past two years, please tell the Undergraduate or Graduate Office or HR (as appropriate to your position).
Two sessions: Session 1 is approximately one hour, followed by Session 2 (risk assessment, also one hour) after a 15-minute break. Session 1 will be preceded by a 20 minute HR induction if there are new staff members present.
