Working at Height: Basic Ladder Safety CANCELLED 09:30 - 10:30 Greenwich House, Cairo Room

Falls from ladders and other height access devices continue to cause injuries to people at work in the University. The new Work at Height Regulations (April 2005) have implications for the University because the emphasis has changed to any fall from any height. Anyone who uses ladders or who supervises work with ladders should attend this session.

This virtual new users course will consist of a number of explanatory videos for each module which will be available before this Q&A webinar session.

This session will cover year end processes in more detail than the road shows and will include:

  • Outline of the year end timetable to be followed
  • Specific procedures and tasks for each module
  • Guidance on journals especially accruals, prepayments and transfer codes
  • Making better use of the Cognos reporting tool
  • Exploring areas that often cause problems
  • Practical advice on how to prioritise during key periods

Introductory course to Japanese. This course is for those with no previous knowledge of Japanese. Communicative context, with videos, audio, texts and conversation.

Come along to this session if you’d like to develop some practical tools for becoming a white ally and build a strong antiracist identity. The training will be split into two 1h sessions. This will allow us to make space for discussion while not making the zoom meeting too long.

Medicine: Creating a Conference Poster (for University and NHS) new Finished 12:00 - 13:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

A course to take you through conference poster design, with tips and resources to help with the content and presentation in order to ensure you communicate your research effectively. The course will cover where to source good quality, free graphics, how to include references in your poster, and advice about how best to present it at a conference. The session will NOT involve hands-on creation of a poster.

Fun introductory course to Spanish. This course is for those with little or no previous knowledge of Spanish. Communicative context, with videos, audio, texts and conversation.

This course will be taught online: there will be three classes per week, each lasting for two hours. The classes will be taught over Zoom which is a user-friendly interface that is easy and free to use. It also allows for collaborative work.

This course will introduce graduate students, early-career researchers, and professionals in the humanities to the technologies of image recognition and machine vision, including recent developments in machine vision research in the past half-decade. The course will seek to combine a technical understanding of how machine vision systems work, with a detailed understanding of the possibilities they open to research and study in the humanities, and with a critical exploration of the social, political and ideological dimensions of machine vision.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the basic tasks of machine vision, such as Image Classification, Object Detection, Image-to-Image Translation, Image Captioning, Image Segmentation etc.
  • Understand the fundamental technical operations of image processing and machine vision: the pixel encoding of images, Gaussian and convolutional filters,
  • Explore critical aspects of machine vision in a technically-informed way: e.g. the problems in algorithmic bias brought about by featureless convolutional networks
  • Develop and run their own simple machine vision and image processing pipelines, in a visual programming language compiling to Python
  • Understand the potential synergies and limitations of machine vision applications in humanities research and cultural heritage institutions

An Introduction to Biological Networks & their Visualization (Webinar) Finished 10:00 - 11:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Webinar (Time Zone = BST in Summer, GMT in Winter)

This webinar is an Introduction to Biological Networks, their types, and applications. It will include two of the most commonly used open source Network Visualisation Platforms (R-igraph and Cytoscape) with step-wise protocols for creating and visualising your own data as a network. It will present some of the major layout algorithms, visual styles and tips for effective visualisation, with examples from biology revealing how these can improve analysis and provide insights.

The webinar will be presented in the form of a lecture as well as a tutorial with step-wise screenshots that enable listeners to emulate simple Network creation and analysis. Please note that this is a webinar and not a coding exercise. Links to publicly available resources and hands-on tutorials will be shared with you for further reading and practice.
