This course is made up of 8 sessions which will be based around the topics below: unlike other courses in the Graduate Lecture Series, it is essential to attend all 8 sessions to benefit from this training. Places are limited so please be absolutely certain upon booking that you will commit to the entire course.

Once you book this course, you will need to register for each session via Zoom.

Need to present meetings or teach using Teams? Then join us in this friendly hand on session to learn how to get up and running. You will have the opportunity to practice managing a meeting.

The course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate. If you are not using Outlook or Exchange Online for your email, please contact the instructor to discuss the implications for this course.

You will:

  • Understand the various ways of meeting with colleagues
  • Create a meeting for yourself or on behalf of others
  • Give and take control of participants' desktops
  • Practice managing your content when leading a meeting or teaching online

If you book:

  • Install the Microsoft Teams app. (It is possible to join using Edge or Chrome but there is less functionality when using a browser).
  • Important: The instructor cannot troubleshoot access to Microsoft Teams on the day of the course. If you are in an institution that is managing their own Teams tenancy (CAMENT, JBS, medschl and some of the colleges) then you may not have access to the files or calendar used in the course. Please contact the instructor in advance to discuss this.

Medicine: Getting the best results - improving your database searching (for NHS staff only) new Finished 14:00 - 16:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

A course specifically for NHS staff. Attendees will learn how to search databases accessed with an Athens login (such as Medline, Embase and Cinahl) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography.

All attendees are required to have an NHS Athens login. University of Cambridge staff and students wanting to learn similar material should book onto the Introduction to Literature Searching (for University) course instead.

An Introduction to Solving Biological Problems with Python (ONLINE LIVE TRAINING) (1 of 2) Finished 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout.

This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core aspects of Python illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, attentive participants will be able to write simple Python programs and customize more complex code to fit their needs.

Please note that the content of this course has recently been updated. This course now mostly focuses on core concepts including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. Concepts and strategies for working more effectively with Python are now the focus of a new 2-days course, Data Science in Python.

Second Year Recharge: Reconnect with Your PhD

This four-day programme is designed to help you take a fresh and positive look at your work during the second year – a notoriously tricky stage to feel you have the clarity and motivation to keep going. This is true at the best of times, let alone during a global pandemic!

We recommend that you attend all four sessions of the programme, but you are very welcome to book for single sessions, i.e. there is no requirement to sign up for the whole programme or to have completed the preceding sessions in order to book for a later one.

For those who attend the morning session, there will also be an opportunity to attend an optional afternoon session, where we delve deeper into the content in a small group. The afternoon sessions will be limited to 30 people and will be available on a first come, first served basis. (Booking links for the afternoon session will be under 'joining instructions' in your booking confirmation email).

The year 2020 has been a strange one, to put it lightly.

In times of difficulty, and in challenging environments, perhaps the most important character trait is our ability to stay motivated and to keep going. In this short, interactive webinar we'll examine the factors around both finding and then using your motivation to achieve your goals.

We’ll also examine how to build productive habits and what efficient and effective researchers do whether they be working in isolation or in a post-vaccine new normality…

Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts.

Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below.

What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above.

A course specifically for University of Cambridge staff and students. Attendees will learn how to search medical/healthcare databases accessed with a Raven login (such as Medline and Embase) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. This course is delivered at an introductory/refresher level, and assumes you have had no prior training in how to search databases.

All attendees are required to have a Raven login. NHS staff wanting to learn similar material should book onto our 'Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching' course instead.

Dr Olivia Remes (Institute for Manufacturing) PhD found that living in a poor area increased anxiety disproportionally in women. She has also contributed to discussions around coping with anxiety and loneliness during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Dr Chris Rauh's (Department of Economics) recent work has shown that women have borne the financial brunt of the COVID-19 lockdowns in the UK and US.

This event will explore the links between Olivia and Chris’ areas of expertise to examine whether women have experienced an increased financial burden during the COVID-19 Pandemic, resulting in an adverse effect on our mental health and wellbeing.

This online seminar is the first in a three-part series that has been designed to support staff in investigating, understanding and addressing the awarding gaps in their courses, Departments or Colleges.

The workshop activities will be led by Dr Laura Hall (Business Information Team).

Participants will be provided with guidance on accessing and interpreting the statistical data available on Tableau, which will help you identify which student groups are less likely to be awarded Firsts or Good Honours degrees than their peers. Structured activities will help individuals see the awarding gaps in their local institutional contexts across the last 5 years, with opportunities for Q&A. Small group discussion will allow participants to compare findings and begin reflections on the reasons for these gaps.

  • Please note that we are using the term ‘awarding gap’ instead of ‘attainment gap’ to indicate the shift in focus across the Higher Education sector in conversation from student deficit and to institutional responsibility.

This workshop provides an opportunity for academic staff to understand the recruitment and selection process and how to create the conditions where you can recruit the best candidate and avoid common pitfalls. It includes an overview of the recruitment and selection process and identifies the key principles to ensure practice is fair to all candidates at each stage.

The course is primarily aimed at academic staff involved in making selection decisions for academic roles and those with responsibility for coordinating academic recruitment procedures.

Administered by the Language Centre, the AJ Pressland Fund offers bursaries of up to £1,000 to support language study abroad for students within the Schools of Biological Science, Clinical Medicine, Physical Science and Technology.

Those applying for a Trinity College Language Bursary are also welcome to attend.

The aim of this optional workshop is to support with choosing a short language course abroad. We can offer pointers for evaluating the options available and share information gleaned from students' feedback on courses that they have attended.

Students should be planning to study a language overseas for up to 4 weeks during the Long Vacation and funds awarded may be used to support course fees, accommodation and travel as required.

This intensive Persian course is designed particularly for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Persian language, culture and heritage. However the course can be equally useful for those who are interested in learning Persian for more general purposes.

We offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce spoken and written language on variety of topics.

The classes are going to be conducted more or less in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for speaking and listening practice in Persian. And the medium of class will swiftly change to Persian by the end of the term. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Persian and/or communicate in Persian with native speakers.

Collaboration Tools: Microsoft Teams - Fast Track (Live Online using MS Teams) Finished 09:30 - 13:00 UIS Online Microsoft Teams 4

Want an insight into Teams? Then join us in this friendly, fast-paced, session to learn how to get up and running. This course would suit people that are comfortable using computers and who would be confident referring to the course materials after the session to consolidate the detail.

However, if you would prefer a more in depth and slower paced course with more opportunity for practice then attend Teams Parts 1 - 4 instead (see Related courses below).

If so join us in this friendly, introductory session to learn how to get up and running with Outlook 365 Email and Calendar using the Desktop application for Windows, where we will take you through the basics of the Outlook 365.

This course does not cover the Hermes migration tool or in-depth technical questions regarding Outlook and Exchange. For this information please see the Further Information for IT staff webpages.

We all like that feeling when we know why we are doing something and how it’s helping us achieve a long-term goal. When we know our own purpose and can communicate it to those around us we can find opportunities and collaboration more often.

In this session we will uncover your values and skills and see how they direct the path and purpose in your career. We will also explore how you aren’t just ‘one’ CV but are, in fact, multiple CVs depending on the situation. Come and explore the many sides of yourself and possibly uncover even more of your potential.

Have you ever faced any issues related to authorship within your research group or making a submission to a journal? - Who gets to be an author? - How do you start a conversation on authorship with your research team? - What approaches can be used to resolve an authorship problem? - How are mistakes handled in a published paper? - In what circumstances will a paper be retracted from a journal?

Publishing research, and getting fair credit for publishing, can lead to difficulties and pitfalls (especially if you’re unsure about how to best manage various aspects of the process).

Using case studies and group discussion, this course will explore best practice in authorship and publication from deciding how authorship of a paper is decided to managing the challenges that can arise when working with publishers or editors. Discussions will include ‘grey areas’, common issues and pitfalls, and you will be given the opportunity to share your experiences and perspectives.

The instructor is Dr Rhys Morgan, Research Governance and Integrity Officer, or Dr Sinead Healy of the Research Strategy Office (RSO).

There is an increasing emphasis in research on the management and sharing of data. Many funding bodies that support research undertaken at Cambridge require not only open access to any publications based on that research, but also to the data underlying it. This course will help you understand funders’ requirements for management and sharing of research data, and will provide opportunities to create your own data management plan and test out resources that will make the data management process easier.

Crucial Conversations: How Can We Tackle Them? new Finished 11:00 - 13:00 N/A - PPD Zoom (Internal Ref:Standard)


A crucial conversation is a discussion between two or more people where the stakes are high, opinions vary and emotions run strong: it is sensitive by nature. For these reasons, the conversation may require courage to have. So it is human nature to delay or even avoid the conversation. The longer you leave it though, the more challenging actually having the conversation becomes.

Join this webinar to learn about the sort of crucial conversations we may need to have and why it’s important to act early. The aim is then to provide ideas and tips to help you better prepare for and handle a crucial conversation well and with confidence – whether online or in person. Some eLearning resources for you to further your learning on the topic will be shared after the session.

The University has made a commitment to establish and implement a University-wide Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with the international standard ISO 14001:2015.

We have been working with a consultant, Karen Gallagher, to develop the remaining elements of the EMS. Work has been slowed by the Covid-19 pandemic but with the onset of the new academic year and us all working in a ‘new normal’ we hope to push forward with establishing the remaining elements of the EMS. This will involve, amongst other things, duty of care and compliance training for relevant operational staff; the continuation of internal audits tackling our areas of high risk first; and checking the competency of staff that have a role in the EMS and identifying any gaps in training needs.

This briefing is for colleagues within the Estates Division and Safety Office and the purpose of the briefing is to:

  • describe the purpose and value of ISO14001 certification
  • describe the relevance of ISO14001 to the ED and Safety Office and management responsibilities for EMS
  • summarise key policies and procedures and how these relate to ED and Safety Office teams, and
  • outline key actions required for ED and Safety Office teams.

The briefing will take place on MS Teams and attendees will be emailed a full agenda, including meeting links, nearer the time.

Come along to this session if you’d like to develop some practical tools for becoming a white ally and build a strong antiracist identity. The training will be split into two 1h sessions.

This will allow us to make space for discussion while not making the zoom meeting too long.

While the session may be most helpful to white colleagues, everyone is warmly invited to attend.
