PIs: Working Effectively with your Postdoc – Webinar and Q&A new Finished 15:00 - 16:00 N/A - PPD Zoom (Internal Ref:Standard)

This session extends the PI working effectively with your postdoc webinar; it is a pre-requisite to have attended or to watch the webinar in full before attending. In conversation with contributor Dr Ewan St John Smith, this interactive session considers some of the extended questions that came up that we did not have time to cover. These include typical questions below.

  • What is the best way to handle a situation where a postdoc has very different expectations of the post even after many one-to-one discussions?
  • I struggle to give enough direction that they stay close to the core work. Do you have recommendations for how to help guide people towards the work that's relevant and important to you and the grant?
  • How might you handle a situation where one lab member has low enthusiasm/drive and that seems to affect others?
  • Most groups have students, early postdocs and experienced postdocs. What are the main differences in working with them?
  • How often should I interact with a member of staff during a period of extended leave, and should I support interaction with the group during leave?

Following a recent announcement by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCO), the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) will be expanded to international researchers as well as international students.

The ATAS scheme currently applies to certain international students who require a visa to study in the UK and are intending to study at postgraduate level in certain sensitive subjects which may be “against the UK’s national interests”, predominately in programmes to develop Advanced Conventional Military Technology (ACMT), weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) or their means of delivery.

From 21 May 2021, the ATAS will be extended to cover ‘researchers’ intending to work in the UK in areas of research in these same sensitive areas. The ATAS requirement will only affect those applying for Skilled Worker, Tier 5 GAE and visitor visas.

The briefings will be run by Graeme Ross, Immigration and Compliance Manager for the HR Division, and will be held remotely via Zoom. The briefing will cover the known areas of guidance on how the scheme will operate, who will be eligible for an ATAS certificate, and the potential impacts on recruitment and immigration at the University.

You will have the opportunity to explore what development opportunities you could grasp and what networks might assist you. You will also have the opportunity to consider what’s holding you back and how you can overcome these barriers to fulfil your career aspirations. You will leave the workshop with a personal career plan in draft format, that you will be able to explore in greater depth during the second part of the programme.

Part 2

An hour-long one-to-one virtual career coaching session provided by a professional career coach from LHH, to take place on the 1st June 2021. The booking link will be circulated for participants at a later date.

Part 3

Access to an Online Career Development Tool designed to further support career development and progression. The tool enables you to assess your skills and behavioural attributes against the levels required for your current role, and for roles that you may wish to progress into in the future.
