Level 3 Award (ILM) in Leadership and Management

Description


Please note that bookings cannot be placed for the ILM. A new Inclusive Leadership Programme is starting in Michaelmas 2019 and will cover the same key areas as the ILM, including leadership styles, effective communication and effective problem solving. These will be framed within the context of making fair and consistent management decisions. Please search for 'Inclusive Leadership Programme' here on the University Training Booking System to view current events, and note that additional dates will be released.

This programme offers an introduction to management skills and is externally accredited by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM). It is highly participative and there is a strong emphasis on applying new learning to your work situation for the benefit of your team and your department.

The course is primarily aimed at those who currently have management responsibilities for others (including managers, team leaders or supervisors) or equivalent responsibilities (e.g. for managing services, projects, resources). All participants must have the opportunity to meet the assessment requirements which are specified by the ILM – please see further details below.

Prerequisites
  • This programme requires attendance at all five sessions and 30 minute tutorial
Aims
  • to understand the manager’s role in leading and developing their team or function
  • to be able to establish effective working relationships through improved communication
  • to be able to use problem-solving and decision-making skills to improve the area you manage
  • to demonstrate good management and HR practice
  • to have achieved a nationally recognised qualification
Charging
  • A financial contribution of £159 will need to be made by the individual/their department for University staff
  • A fee of £683 is payable for any College and Non-University Teaching Institution staff wishing to attend
  • Please note that these fees incorporate ILM fees and assessment costs
  • When you make your booking please select 'Full' in the charging section and send a purchase order number from your Department/College/Institution to PPD to confirm your payment of the relevant amount
  • All purchase orders should be raised to ‘Human Resources’ (Customer Number: 1007)
Further information
  • This course is externally accredited by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), a national awarding body specialising in management qualifications
  • The sessions focus on developing skills in the context of working within the University
  • Each session involves a combination of theory and opportunities to practice the new skills learnt
  • The methods used will include tutor input, small group and individual activities, case studies, practice sessions, videos and group discussions
  • You are encouraged to build on previous experience and to continually relate course content back to the issues and situations you face in your workplace
Assessment
  • Assessment is by the production of three pieces of work, briefly described below (full details of the assignments can be found by clicking on the relevant link):
  • Problem solving - you will need to identify a 'problem' in the workplace and be able to generate a number of possible solutions that you have authority to action (or could be delegated the authority to action)
  • Managing conflict in the workplace - you will need to identify and discuss a conflict situation you have experienced or observed (and describe how it was managed) and identify management strategies for avoiding conflict
  • Leadership - describe when you could use a variety of management styles (with examples), assess your own management style/preferences and identify areas for your development
  • You will also need to complete the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Essentials e-learning module in your own time (approx 1 hour)
  • If you need to discuss whether or not you can meet these assessment requirements (may depend on role and experience), please email PPD and arrange to speak to one of the programme tutors
Notes
  • You must attend all five sessions and complete the assessment requirements to qualify for the award
  • A mandatory one-to-one Tutorial lasting 30 minutes will take place on one of the two red starred dates listed above - please ensure you are available on both dates until we have confirmed your Tutorial slot on Day 1
